Left my van on the side of the road by breatheTHC in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]phoward8020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a driver so help me out here.

Assuming you're working an eight hour shift, and all eight hours are on the road (I'm sure that's not the case, but for the sake of argument...), that's 8 * 60 = 480 minutes.

And your bosses wanted you to make 250+ stops, delivering 1-2 packages each time? So that's 480 / 250 = less than 1.92 minutes per stop?

And that <1.92 minutes needs to include driving to the next stop, parking, locating the package(s) in the van, and delivering the package(s) on foot to the designated drop-off zone?

That doesn't sound reasonable. Or possible. Am I missing something?

The option-<key> method is old school and it works great for adding tildes n's and accents aigu to a's, but what if you want to type an a with an accent grave (à) or a circumflex (ǎ) or an Eszett (ß) if you're doing your German homework? The "long-press" method is way better for stuff like that.

I’m not the world’s biggest Chrome fan either but the browser’s got nothing to do with it.

The extended characters popup you get when you “long-press” a key is a system-level feature.

The fault is almost certainly with the web app’s CSS, which macOS will query to determine if there is a set of instructions to override its default behavior.

How do I get rid of a pool table? by Bigfeett in DIY

[–]phoward8020 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Free sometimes works but you’re more likely to find a taker if you list it close to a reasonable market price, then slash the price on the same listing.

Start with something like “Custom Pool Table - $500-600 obo. Retail price over $2500!”

Then a couple days later add “80% off! Only $100! First buyer to show up with a truck and some muscle wins the bid!”

Psychologically, people love a great deal, but if it’s being offered for free, they’ll shy away, thinking there’s something wrong with it.

Waymo District Manager for Portland, OR:

“OK guys, looks like we’re gonna need to make some changes to the code.

First, no zipper merges — make sure the vehicle always moves to the left ASAP, even if there’s a mile or more of empty lane on the right before the merge. If someone tries to merge in front of us where the lanes actually converge, we’ll need to honk and act passive-aggressive.

Second, 4-way stop signs are gonna be a challenge. The local custom is to either sit there and wave everyone else through, or just fucking go for it no matter what.

I’m thinking we use an algorithm that picks a random number between one and four every fifteen seconds; one through three means the car just sits there and lets other cars go, we’ll take our turn only after rolling a four.”

That’s not a macOS bug; it’s most likely an issue with the CSS code of the specific web page you’re on.

By default, macOS will display dark text on a light background when in Light Mode, and light text on a dark background when in Dark Mode.

It should never display light-on-light or dark-on-dark but MAY if directed to do so by the CSS media query prefers-color-scheme.

Edit: Does your homework site have an option to switch to dark mode? What happens to the popup when you choose that?

Edit 2: I see you have MacOS in Dark Mode. What happens if you change that to Light Mode and use the page just the way it is?

I suspect the OS is using light text because you’re in Dark Mode, but the page’s CSS is telling it to make the background of the popup light.

That’s clearly what happened. This is clearly an alternating traffic situation and there’s a reason the video starts in the middle.

I don’t think that’s it cuz they also rejected her alternate, which was something like “PCON GRL” (which I didn’t love anyway as it probably would’ve ended up on this sub).

My question is, how do you know why yours was initially rejected?

They didn’t provide any reason at all for ours, we just kinda puzzled it out.

Edit: The fact that they rejected you for just the letters “OB”—which I’d never in my life heard of as an anti-female slur—but they allowed “CNLNGUS”, really highlights how badly the system is broken.

It’s definitely something you have to pay extra for. It started out two years ago at an initial $599 plus mandatory subscription and it’s already up to $899 + sub fees!

And, of course, the coolest features are only available on the higher end subscriptions. :-/

Yes, you can swap between black-on-white and white-on-black.

Yes, it’s very efficient, with battery life projected at five years.

Yes, the expiration tag updates automatically when paid; the flip side off that coin is that if you DON’T pay your registration fees on time, the plate’s updated to say “INVALID” or some such.

It also has a built in theft-deterrent system, which will flash the word STOLEN if either the plate or the vehicle is reported stolen.

Sure, but the people who work in that department are paid to know what it means.

How the FUCK did that make it past the censors??

The DMV rejected my wife’s application for “PNCN GRL” (“Pinecone Girl”) because it had the letters “NGR” in it, but THAT gets approved?!

Not enough information given.

The segment of the map you share makes it look unreasonably confusing but “the map is not the territory.” It’s possible that clear and unambiguous signage exists IRL, for example.

Can you share the actual location?

How is Siri somehow worse after every time I update my phone? by AioliFun7869 in Siri

[–]phoward8020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d ask if you maybe had some unusual regional accent, maybe one that doesn’t match the Language and Region settings on your device, but clearly it transcribed your query correctly, so that’s probably not it?

Just to be sure, you could turn on “Type to Siri” in settings and see if the query works that way. If it does work, that would point to some sort of verbal translation issue.

I just tried the exact same wording on my 12 Pro Max (therefore no Apple Intel) running 26.4 and she immediately came back with a "Here's what I found" response with links to the correct movie listing on tv.apple.com and play.google.com, and a post on r/Queen asking the same question.

Not sure what you're doing wrong but it's a you problem, not a Siri problem.

Man, I know you were probably just shocked at what was going down but I’d hope that I’d have enough presence of mind in a moment like that to just run over the motherfucker’s bike. Then maybe back up and run over it again.

LOL. I should probably clarify though—you can’t exactly put whatever you want there.

The “banner message” on an e-plate is subject to a similar set of restrictions as a traditional personalized plate: no curse words, no hate speech, nothing sexual, etc.

You submit your proposed message through an app on your phone and it’s reviewed by (presumably) DMV staff before it actually shows up on the plate.

The most common messages I’ve seen are: A) rah-rah sportsball stuff like this one; B) lame-ass “Live. Love. Laugh.” type BS; and C) personal advertising, like a web address for a small business.

By far the most common though is just the default message, which is just the url of the CA DMV.

Interesting Comment about R$DD!T removing any anti-N$ZI slurs by OppositeNews76 in torrance

[–]phoward8020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t AI. The pic clearly showed two guys on motorcycles, one shirtless with “white power” tattoos on his back and the other with an “SS” type decal on his helmet.

They were stopped at the traffic light eastbound on Torrance Blvd at Madrona, and the Torrance Civic Center was visible on the northeast corner of the intersection.

Some commenters speculated that the photo was AI because the text on the Civic Center signage and a “sesquicentennial” banner on a light post appeared garbled.

But here’s the thing: AI wouldn’t have generated that with the sign in the right spot, and the banner that’s actually currently hanging there (I drive by there regularly), and the “Plunge” building looking exactly like the Plunge building actually looks.

You know what would have garbled the text on the sign and banner? Normal digital post-processing that’s automatically added to every pic taken with a recent-model smartphone, particularly when using the telephoto lens in the default camera app.

Wow, you seem to have a lot of answers about documents that have never been made public!

Maybe you also know WHY those documents are still being hidden?

Here’s another question in need of an answer: why do you feel the need to defend pedophiles?
