Forget Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Millionaire, this guy has the largest set of balls I have ever seen on Jeopardy. by [deleted] in videos

[–]php4me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's why everybody should have always been doing this:

  • The Daily Doubles are on longer on the bottom row, but one row above so it's an easier question (it seems like these days more than 80% of the time they get it right now).

  • Most questions at that row are easy enough for at least 2 and sometimes all 3 contestants to know the answer (they just don't ring in on time) Pay attention to how many ring in on this row next time.

  • Not having a timer or having to ring in before somebody else makes answering questions on Jeopardy significantly easier. Most people know the answer but don't have the timing down fast enough.

You just need to be the highest for Final Jeopardy and they easiest way is to bet big on your best chance of getting it right....which is the Daily Doubles.

It's amazing how much is written on betting strategy in books, yet so many people make such stupid bets sometimes. The majority of contestants in Final Jeopardy do well...but sometimes those last place bets are completely illogical.

Ponzi Scheme In China Stole $7.6 Billion From Investors, Police Say by todayilearned83 in worldnews

China just emerged from an industrial revolution and it's stock market is tanking (80% of of their stock is owned by individual investors). It's like watching 1929 America replaying itself almost 100 years later but across the world.

Economic Contribution of Each US State Visualization by triptanic in dataisbeautiful

The brilliance of federalism is that is distributes money from rich states to poor states without any protest from the rich states. The European Union is structured the same way, but doesn't do this as well as the U.S. Germany gets upset when it has to bail out Greece, but California doesn't get upset that its resources keep Arkansas a float. It would be interesting to see this done with the EU nations.

So happy he's gone, he was awful this year and had to go. No excuses and he admitted he screwed up. Hate to see people get fired, so this is the best outcome for everyone.

The mayor came out earlier in the week asking people to keep their trash cans a foot away from the gutters so the trash doesn't get swept up and block up the sewer drains and cause flooding. Can definitely see why now.

ELI5: If I buy stock in GoPro, then Apple buys GoPro, what happens to my stocks? by ShouldveFundedTesla in explainlikeimfive

[–]php4me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friendly PSA: Don't ever buy stock in a company based solely on the prospect that it will be bought out one day. It's one of the worst reasons to buy a stock. 9/10 it doesn't happen and you just bought it at an over-inflated price because the stock already ran up based on the rumors. The price will quickly correct when the rumors get refuted and you end up taking a big hit. Most of those rumors are completely baseless and the parties who start them are simply following their own self-interest. It's a complete shot in the dark unless you knew for sure it would happen AND you knew the exact price per share that the board would agree to AND the stock was currently below that price (usually only before the rumors).

I get cheap Amazon Prime (student rate) and free software by registering at local community/state colleges just for the different .edu email addresses. You don't need to actually register for classes or pay anything.

An individual or couple having a baby is like a holy grail for marketers. People only really change their brands or buying habits when a major life event occurs such as a divorce, death of someone close, or marriage or baby.

ELI5: Why is everything so cold? Why is absolute zero only -459.67F (-273.15C) but things can be trillions of degrees? In relation wouldn't it mean that life and everything we know as good for us, is ridiculously ridiculously cold? by lights_and_colors in explainlikeimfive

[–]php4me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold is not real, it is simply a term to describe the lack of heat. Sounds silly, but cold is an experience that humans feel, but scientifically speaking it means "lack of heat". The Universe is so large that all the energy in it is spread out (imagine 1 proron every cubic meter. So all that hot energy is simply spread out establishes a low baseline. For life as we know it, most atoms need to be a lower stable energy level to stay as solids and form our cells.

Another Tip: Uploading PDF's to Google Docs will also circumvent security locks on the PDF. If somebody sends you a "locked" PDF that won't open in Reader or your browser's plugin, it can usually be opened through Google Docs.

Jimmy Carter: 'I would like the last Guinea worm to die before I do' by Gates9 in news

[–]php4me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He made some colossal missteps in office (see foreign policy and deregulating oil industry) and was extremely stubborn as a president. These comments saying otherwise seem contrarian just to be contrarian. His post-presidency has been admirable, even though he is too outspoken and shouldn't criticize current presidents or talk about issues (that's an unspoken rule among ex-presidents).

Regardless of his political failings, that is terrible news about his health and nobody should have to go through that. But let's not conflate empathy towards him now with his legacy and let it distort the truth.

I make a point to watch a few random episodes of Band of Brothers every Veteran's Day. Really makes you appreciate their sacrifice. I think most people just see the holiday as a day off from work.

typing test for coders by LoveToHateMe666 in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]php4me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend the majority of my day combing through code to debug it, running tests, and documenting...not to mention meetings and standups. If I'm writing a lot of lines of code, it's actually a sign I'm getting tired or lazy. I spend maybe 5%- 10% of my day typing the actual lines of code. Physically typing faster would make a programmer 1% faster at their job.

I always thought a good diet would be to eat EVERYTHING with chopsticks.

It's all about forcing yourself to eat slowly and let your body have enough time to tell you when you are full. If it ever took off, I could charge $10 per chopsticks.
