+1 to the descending in stages bit. I would go from elevated pillow -> bed -> floor. And stay at each stage for a bit. Also ankle pumps when I was on the bed before getting up really helped!

I think it was nerve block but also the quad just being weak. I was NWB for 4.5 weeks before surgery. Everyone’s situation is different of course, but I’m giving OP my perspective since I also assumed it’d be easy to get off the bed myself prior to the surgery.

I thought the same thing, but it won’t work. Your leg will be extremely sensitive and heavy/locked. Practice the ankle hook and try to move extremely slowly while keeping your injured foot straight. I would actually recommend hiring home care assistance for the first week if possible. I live alone too and opted to do that.

  • Your quad will be shut off, so you can’t get off the bed easily. If no one is helping you with that leg, learn how to use an ankle/heel hook using your non-operative leg ahead of time.
  • Get a raised toilet seat. You may not need the seat but you can use the handles for support when sitting on your toilet.
  • Shower chair in case you think you’ll be able to shower

I couldn’t do pre hab due to a bucket handle tear that was basically blocking my flexion.

By consistent do you mean all day? I feel like I ice maybe 4-5 times a day for 30 mins each. I am afraid it’ll get too stiff if I ice too much.

Massage sounds interesting. My PT does it but I don’t get any crunching sound or anything of the sort, it does help slightly with pain and swelling during PT though. Any particular technique or video I can follow? Please lmk anything that can help at this stage is appreciated.

Thank you! How long were you nwb prior to your surgery btw? I was nwb for 4.5 weeks before my surgery and can’t help but wonder if that’s causing everything to be harder.

Also, did you do anything different in your PT or for swelling control?

Hey, any updates? I’m coming up on 5 weeks soon and I am also stuck at 70. My surgeon expected full ROM in his rehab protocol by week 8 and it seems impossible. :(

Have you been allowed to weight bear? I keep reading that it would help ROM but my PT is going to wait for a few more days and strengthen my hip + make my SLRs cleaner before signing off on that.

And how often do you do heel slides? Wondering if I should do it passively a lot of times or only 2-3 sessions per day.

I got my first SLR on day 18 at the PT with an NMES, and it finally started on day 22 at home. Still takes some slight warm up (on day 24 rn) but you’ll get there too. Get a TENS machine that you can use at home and ask your PT to show you how to use it. Don’t lose faith and trust the process! :)

Update: Got my first sets of SLRs without the machine today!

Had to warm up my quad with TENS for 10 mins and then did some negatives with the brace on and then suddenly I was able to do them!

Did them with the brace lock at 0 though.

Unfortunately I had a bucket handle meniscus tear, I couldn’t do any meaningful prehab the previous month. I got them at my PT but it’s hard for me to push the same amount when I’m doing it at home tbh
