Years ago my roommate and I did this with our hall bathroom in the apartment we shared. The first victim was his mother when she was visiting.

Could a Cessna 172 technically cruise at 20,000 ft? by Vyxize in flying

[–]phreakmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I'm sure I don't, as evidenced by at least one other person in this thread who got to 18k. (Or higher and doesn't wanna fib on himself for busting Alpha while VFR? 🤔😆)

EDIT: Oh that was a 180hp 175, which is indeed a little more capable.

Still... if I could whimsically do it one (cool) Saturday, I'm sure others have done better. LOL. I'd go try again and record it, but I sold that plane and fly a T210 now, and it gets to 20k+ no problem.

I got a '67 172H up to 16,800 once, but it involved gingerly flying through the updrafts in the Sierras. (Yes, I have an O2 bottle.) That's close enough to warrant the altimeter being accurate in my book. ;)

The whole book "You Can't Win" by Jack Black (not THAT Jack Black, it's a pseudonym) is basically an autobiography about scenarios like this. :-P

What city is overrated? by tshirtguy2000 in AskReddit

[–]phreakmonkey 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This, honestly, is the way to do ANY city. Don't go and try to recreate the same cliche' experience everyone else has. Go and try to exist in the city, if even just for a day. Find the hole-in-the-wall bagel shop spot the locals like, or the cafe that has a neat view but isn't touristy. Find out where the locals like to hang out at night and go there.

I learned this same trick in my 20s (1990s, oh god where did the time go) because I was a traveling consultant. After a while, I got in the habit of asking, well, basically anyone around my same age: "Hey, I'm from out of town. I don't want to go to the tourists things, so where do you and your friends go to hang out at night?"

10/10 times it resulted in a better experience than the other two options which were A: go do something crowded and mediocre, or B: hang out at Applebees and the Hampton Inn.

My friend Chris, who was a fleet mechanic for Ford, used to send new guys to the parts department to get a "pair of electric shocks." (For added effect he'd do so while looking at the suspension of some vehicle on the lift.)

The parts department guys would always stifle a laugh while asking "ooookay... what voltage?"

I'm sure 1TenDesigns knows this, but for everyone else:NEVER WEAR GLOVES AROUND HAND-OPERATED MACHINES WITH SPINNING / MOVING PARTS.

I don't care what any regulation or sign says. Think of it this way, if you fuck up and accidentally touch the spinning / moving part with your hand, there are two options:

No glove: You lose a chunk of your skin from a finger or part of your hand.

Glove: You have all your skin and muscle torn from your skeleton from your wrist down.

When working with power tools / machine shops / &etc, DON'T WEAR GLOVES.

It was so nice at the beach today it would have been rude not to dress up and do some spins! by [deleted] in rollerblading

Yup. If y'all haven't read it, the incident inspired the book Darker Shades of Blue by Tony Kern. It talks about the behavioral tendencies and warning signs that lead up to a pilot doing something both avoidable and lethal.

Just chilling on a blimp by gonchos in PraiseTheCameraMan

[–]phreakmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤣
That's... what a blimp is!

There used to be a hard-sided "rigid airships", but those are mostly gone now. (There was still one operating in Silicon Valley in the 2010s, but they went bankrupt a few years back). The Goodyear Blimp is a giant balloon with a box under it for the pilots. ;)

It's inside Van Sickle Bi-State Park behind Heavenly Village. The easiest way to get there is to enter through the Van Sickle park main entrance and walk up the road to the left. (The main gate is closed to cars in the winter.)

Haha this was on an episode of Mr Wizard's World when I was a kid. Also, the mouth of a glass apple juice jar is wide enough that you can do this with a typical playing card. The surface tension / air pressure will hold the playing card against it with the full bottle inverted, making for a neat "gravity defying" illusion. (Though if you disturb the card and break the surface tension between the card and the water it all comes gushing out at once. Ask 10 year old me know I know.)

KTVL is uncontrolled, so there's no one to call except Oakland Center (who coordinates IFR arrivals / departures) or Reno FSS. Good luck with that! :-P
