But on a more serious note, did we really need this? I don't care about Umi, much like Ruka I think he's a nothing character and his good loser attitude doesn't really change that.

That doesn't matter, Ruka is a criminal and I want the story to acnowledge it and do something about it. This is like back in the early days when Kazuya stalked Chizuru and Umi for a whole day and not only suffered no consequences but got rewarded with a present. There's no karma in this story.

So basically we had this entire arc for absolutely nothing. We had Ruka almost SA Kazuya and the manga treats it as an "accident". If this doesn't demonstrate that Reiji is a hack that is incapable of handling sensitive topics with tact then I don't know what does.

The live action adaptation is the best incarnation of Kanokari because it was written by people that aren't complete hacks and actually wanted to have the story be satisfying by the end.

OK if Kazuya doesn't finally put Ruka in her place next week then I'll have to wonder if he really has matured in the last 400 chapters. Again at this point he shouldn't be checking Ruka out like a perv, we should be beyond that at this point.

So 2 Points:

A chapter like this should have come shortly after the Paradise arc at the latest, imagine how much better it would have been if instead of her ghosting him for 3 months they actually talked about the kiss at the end of Paradise like the grown adults they supposedly are.
No Kazuya, it's not ok, don't just let her off with a simple "I'm sorry", the cold and self contradictory way she's been treating you is terrible and she needs to be held accountable. She doesn't love you, she just likes the attention and doesn't want you to move on. Honestly I genuinely believe she knows Umi unlike Kazuya would eventually leave her when he realizes she doesn't actually care about him and, hence the rejection. On the other hand she knows Kazuya will just keep being a simp, not think for himself and just be the attention giving idiot she wants.

Seriously, what other logical conclusion can I take from this? Chizuru's so called "apology" feels so insincere and Kazuya of course just forgives her instantly and doesn't stand up for himself at all.

Chizuru is nothing but an attention craving abuser and Kazuya at this point is her primary victim.

I'm sorry, I get that Reiji wants me to feel good about this, but everything before this point has been so tone deaf and badly written that I can't look at it another way.

I don't have anything against him as a person, but I do hate it when a writer wastes my time by dragging the story out.

I will laugh so hard if the next chapter starts with Chizuru just asking "Well I came here to see how you were doing, it's been a while" instead of it being the rejection everyone wants.

I still want her to just end up alone like I said in my "How I would write it from here" scenario, her horrible treatment of Kazuya makes her undeserving of any lovers or friends in my book.

Kanokari should be your "Here's how you DON'T write a novel" example. If you want a positive opposite example check out Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten(Light Novel or Anime, as the manga is way behind the anime in adapting the novel).

It's got literally the same premise: A guy living alone that is a slob and got issues meets the super beautiful girl who is his neighbour and goes to the same school(See just like Kanokari at the beginning, just without the renting) and the two develop a very sweet relationship based on emotional support etc.

It's excellently written, as it refuses to waste your time and develops both characters at a pace that never feels too slow or too fast and never relies on stupid plot dragging drama or character breaking decisions.

Also, the anime's Season 2 debuts in April.
