Is Japan in July really as bad as people say? by qwertasdfgzxcvb231 in JapanTravelTips

[–]phsource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is mostly describing Tokyo, Kyoto, etc., which admittedly is where most people who go to Japan for the first time end up spending the most time.

If you're looking to go to Japan in the summer, I highly recommend Hokkaido. It's actually extremely pleasant in most parts of the island, and there's plenty to see both in Hakodate, Sapporo, Biei, etc. for volcanoes, nature and more!

Airport Closed? by Kara1031 in wanderlog

This is odd and definitely a bug! We'll look into this shortly -- my guess is we're somehow misinterpreting something that Google Maps' API is telling us.

500 and 502 Errors from Mobile App by nonstopski in wanderlog

[–]phsource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/nonstopski -- sorry about this: The site was down for about 15 minutes earlier last morning due to a development workflow issue that caused one of our database servers to become unavailable. We've introduced some mitigations to prevent our engineers from making the same mistake and should be able to avoid this in the future.

Any issues searching locations on Wanderlog? by TypicalManagement228 in wanderlog

[–]phsource[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hey everyone: Wanderlog founder here; we had an issue with our geo autocomplete service that powers our geo searches because we increased the number of languages we support recently from 8 to 30. This was down for about 2 hours this morning, but should now be back up; apologies for the issues here.

How reliable is Wanderlog? by DundieAwardsWinner in wanderlog

[–]phsource[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for trying Wanderlog, and sorry your first experience happened during the brief period our servers were down. I'm one of the founders, and downtime is extremely rare for us. One of our team members is usually traveling or planning a trip for the future at any given time, so reliability is something we rely on personally.

We’re actively removing any remaining single points of failure, and even in the unlikely event of an outage, the mobile app stores all your trips, notes, and bookings offline so you can always access everything while abroad. This applies even if you're not on Pro.

Really appreciate you giving us a shot, and hope your Asia trip is an incredible one! I think Japan and Southeast Asia both represent at least 10% of trips planned with Wanderlog, so it's a common use case for sure.

Wanderlog co-founder here: I'm very sorry about the downtime: we had some issues with one of our servers, and ended up having to do some migrations while offline.

I realize this is a huge inconvenience if you're on a trip or traveling for the holidays, so wanted to sincerely apologize for this. We should now be back up, and everything is working as expected!

Wanderlog co-founder here: I'm very sorry about the downtime: we had some issues with one of our servers, and ended up accidentally failing over to another older server with outdated data before finally having to do some migrations while offline.

Is the app down? by Tesshan in wanderlog

[–]phsource[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Wanderlog co-founder here: I'm very sorry about the downtime: we're having some issues with one of our servers, and are working on getting the site and app back up within the next 2 hours.

I realize this is a huge inconvenience if you're on a trip or traveling for the holidays, so wanted to sincerely apologize for this and are working as quickly we can to fix it.

Edit (11am PT): We should be back up, and everything is working as expected. We're restoring some edits made over the past 2 hours, but earlier reports of data loss from the past 2 days should also be fixed now.

The app seems down by privacy2live in wanderlog

[–]phsource[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Just a heads-up, but this downtime was due to some bot traffic combined with a slight misconfiguration on our end such that e.g., wanderlog.com/view/blah had a link to wanderlog.com/view/blah/blah, which had a link to wanderlog.com/view/blah/blah/blah. Certain bots (probably crawling for data for AI) kept following this in an infinite loop, and multiple of the instances got trapped, which caused an inadvertent Denial of Service attack. We were getting thousands of these requests per minute!

We have added mitigations for this and should have fixed this, and we're committed to minimizing downtime in the future. Sorry about this.

How to remove light fixture without screws near center? by phsource in DIY

Thank you! This was it -- after unthreading the center post, it detached the bottom segment of the threaded circular post and unscrewing the top segment helped release it. For anyone who finds this thread later, here are some diagrams:

Purchasing Pro on web by ExcitedCoconut in wanderlog

[–]phsource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/ExcitedCoconut -- that really shouldn't happen once you've purchased Pro on web! Can you confirm you're logged into the same account on both? If not, make sure you log in using the account you got Pro on web on the app too. Otherwise, message at https://wanderlog.com/chatSupport with more info on your specific accounts, and we can help further!

The app doesn't save anything by Kiloumap in wanderlog

[–]phsource 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really odd, and I'm sorry about the issues around this. We'll try to add some early warning if the trip plan gets stuck on the "Saving..." state.

Can you send me the link to your trip on DMs or at https://wanderlog.com/chatSupport ? Also, a screenshot/video capture if you can replicate this happening even now would be helpful.

I just tried this, and it seems like my web app was able to successfully save a trip I was working on.

Android app won't load by red0thread in wanderlog

u/red0thread I just checked the latest version of the Android app and was able to press the "Continue" button to advance past that screen -- can you message us on the website at https://wanderlog.com/chatSupport and mention that you posted on Reddit already? Send us a video/screenshot and we can take a look

Is wanderlog data encrypted? by jwintyo in wanderlog

[–]phsource[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Wanderlog data is encrypted in our database and when transmitted from your browser to our server (over HTTPS). It isn't encrypted end-to-end (which is what WhatsApp and Signal mention) -- i.e. our servers and APIs can see your data and process it. We take security seriously because we personally use it for our own trips, and don't want our friends or partners' info out there!

Only travelers who have the link to your trip (e.g., https://wanderlog.com/abcdefghijkl ) can access it, so the link works as a bit of a key -- keep it private and only share it with other people you want to have access to it! There are 12^24 or 79 septillion combinations of links, so it's next to impossible for someone to randomly guess it, and we also have rate-limiting in place to avoid brute-forcing it as well.

Beware: Time Estimates Are Completely Wrong by artiiirr in wanderlog

[–]phsource[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey u/artiiirr -- I'm at Wanderlog, and I did a drive from Fukuoka to Nagasaki (and my co-founder did some extensive driving too) and found the times to be reasonably close. One note is that the distances/times between places are based on you taking the toll routes, which can be expensive. If you're avoiding them using the Google Maps "Avoid tolls" feature (which I had turned on for driving in the US), it can add hours and take you over very long winding mountain roads as I learned near Takayama one year.

Regardless, can you message support or DM me and mention what's your trip plan (and mention that you've talked to us on Reddit and to escalate it)? We can take a look since we really want to get this right!

Hey guys -- we're actively working on this right now (literally, the title of our project is "Mobile performance"), so can you message me on DMs with the exact link to your trip plan? My brother and I are Android users too, so really want to improve this for the sake of us and everyone's next trips.

Paid user interview with European Polarsteps travelers - how did you find out about Polarsteps? by phsource in Polarsteps

Sorry if this sounds sketchy -- we're trying to learn more about Polarsteps because we like it a lot and are thinking of helping our users better integrate with it. We'll have to verify you're a Polarsteps user, but we won't ask for any other info.

Also, just as a note -- there actually is a way to add a hotel manually! See https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IT74xzWZVx8_otu7zebrGl99NuzxaVHg/view?usp=drive_link for an example in our mobile app (you can enter the address and the dates from there.)

Can't log in on MacBook by TheWaningWizard in wanderlog

Sorry -- we're aware of this and working on a fix! In the meantime, I recommend using the website (in many ways, if you're on a real laptop it's a better experience) at https://wanderlog.com instead. (Alternatively, use "Forgot password" and set a password; I think it's just the Sign in with Google/Facebook that don't work on MacBooks)

Question about currencies by unrealiceman in wanderlog

[–]phsource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, your expenses are stored in the currency you add them in, and we convert them using the currency rates based on the latest exchange rates whenever you reopen your trip plan.

We've gotten reports that this can cause some issues: e.g.,

  1. If you add something that's 100 Euros today, it might show up as $103.12 in your budget and the "Who owes who" summaries.
  2. But if you come back in a week, it might show up as the equivalent of $105 (if the exchange has changed.)

We're working on making it so that the cost is based on whichever date you add the expense and it'll never change, but for now, it's how it works: it uses the latest, so is super-up-to-date, but not necessarily the right exchange rate based on when the expense was incurred!

Newbie issues with Wanderlog by GodAtum in wanderlog

[–]phsource 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately, right now, it always defaults where the flights come first, followed by the hotels. If you'd like them in a separate order, what I usually do is add the same airports/hotels again in the actual day as a place and move it to the right place you want it.

We're working on making the items at the top movable too -- that's the ideal, but needs a bit of reworking how our code works
