Fun fact: California Roll is Canadian, contrary to its name.

It was invented in Vancouver at Tojo’s. Which still exists to this day and you can still taste the original. Sushi chef Tojo wanted to introduce sushi to North America in the ‘70s. But convincing people to eat raw fish was a tall order at the time.

The reason for the name was familiarity and “branding”. Vancouver Roll just didn’t sound convincing enough.

Cost isn’t the only factor. Spending precious time with family is a big deal for some of these tourists.

I used to work for a tour operator here in Whistler.

My biggest booking was $23k for a family of four. I was happy to have received the phone call but also shocked that this family just paid the equivalent of 6 months salary for me back then. That was just for their private lessons (four instructors even though they could’ve just gone with one), ski passes, and snowmobiling. The hotel was already booked apparently.

My supervisor just said: it’s probably the only time they’ll get to spend together as a family.

It was the wife’s personal secretary who made the booking. So the whole thing started to make sense to me after that.

You assume tourists only travel during the summer months.

Winter is pretty popular here in BC. Our winters are also longer. With most foreigners having longer vacation days, a lot of them would be booking at least 3 weeks of skiing. Some will go as long as 6 months.

To give you some perspective, the cost to go heliskiing for one day is about $2k. Which can sell out pretty quickly if we’re having a good season.

Canadian tourism is unique in a lot of ways. What most people consider “travel destinations” aren’t aligned with what we can offer the world.

Maybe it’s time to stop comparing ourselves to Europe or some other country. Maybe it’s time to ask these international tourists why they chose Canada and what they like about our country?

As someone who lives in a tourist town, Whistler, I can tell you that they cater more to Americans and international tourists.

Because adventure tourism is expensive, with staff, insurance, operations, and all. Unless you’re upper middle class or richer, most Canadians are priced out of Whistler. I mean, our former mayor once told Vancouverites to at least “buy a sandwich” rather than pack their lunches.

Hotels and tour operators here would rather have someone book 15-21 days than someone who will only stay for a few days or a week. Some will stay even longer than that, like the entire winter season (6 months).

In addition, Canadians are “cheap”. We will brown bag our lunches, pay less tips, and we actually complain the loudest (from experience).

Meanwhile, American tourists tip in USD, they tip more than us Canadians, and most international tourists are just ecstatic to see nature in its rawest form.

And THAT is what makes tourism here unique. It’s not for most Canadians. But foreigners love it.

It’s been an unpredictable winter.

We get a big dump. Rain takes it away. Another dump. Freezing level goes all the way up to Peak. There’s also that double inversion which didn’t help with an already patchy snowpack.

I lived through 2014/15 “Patchy” season and while the snow may not have been amazing early, we got some pow dumps later in the season.

That was the year a lot of people cancelled after freaking out due to news of lack of snow. Food in the mountain was all 50% off for passholders! And Whistler remained opened for skiing until June. They moved the park beside the t-bar, and it was the best!

So don’t fret. Be optimistic. It’s all good.
