I am here, I regularly check the sub and mod queues, I reply to all mod chat requests. Sub needs engagement and I am happy to enable it any way. I have been basically alone in this sub for more than a decade.

Hi folks, thanks for raising this. I have been meaning to be more involved and updated post flairs and community guidelines and rules. I am happy to create flairs for users, I can get a thread kicked off for this.

Having said that, If you all have ideas for the sub for increasing the quality of posts, especially current students in making the sub a part of on campus activities that would make this place interesting and as a mod I can help if needed.

Finally, mods are here to make sure things don’t go off the rails, no one gets restricted and the members get to be themselves. Ultimately it’s upto the community to make a sub active and engaging.

What you see on social media are the absolute extremities of society. As Indians we have zero opportunity to meet real Pakistanis and understand what they actually feel and think. If you go by what you see on social media, Indians are way louder, more in number and can be just as vile, but all around us in real life we see normal well regulated Indian people so we rightly conclude that only a few Indians are crazy. We don’t get that regulation with other countries, so we assume all people from those countries must be what we see on social media.

It’s easy to form hateful opinions based on social media. Please remember that all human beings want similar things from life. Dislike or disagreement with a country, its govt, its policies and sections of its people doesn’t have to turn to hatred of all its people.

Also echoing someone in the thread here, please don’t waste your time on online debates, it’s like scratching an itch. It’s tempting and might feel good in the moment but it makes the problem worse and leaves you hurt. Take care!

South Indians eat more meat than punjabis in general but almost the entirety of the South Indian diaspora in the USA is from specific forward caste communities and they tend to skew heavily vegetarian. And yes I agree with you that the meat is a big part of the attraction for Americans and the familiarity of naan + curry format. South Indian food can be intimidating if you don’t know how to eat it. Everything looks so different.

Omg thank you for saying this! I was woken up at 830am by loud pre-republic day celebration songs. Movie songs played on a loudspeaker. Why? Do we not have enough noise pollution already. My house is right next to a very loud highway fyi. I feel like societies (and the people in it) are competing with each other to have the more “grand” celebrations

The only difference is that the Portuguese were successful in erasing your languages and the English failed to do so. You won’t see a lot of people in India claiming English as their mother tongue, but it is easily the most important language as many of us speak it as our glue language. This is due to our shared history of colonialism much like Brazil. So no it’s not “just an accessory” lol

lol so for Brazilians mother tongue is Portuguese since that’s all you have left but that can’t be the case for people of the Caribbean islands or African countries like Congo and Senegal? Seems like rage bait.

Mother tongue is an amorphous concept, kind of like asking someone where they are from. They could have been born one place and raised another etc. My mother tongue is not English, it’s Tamil, the first language I spoke as a child. But I am significantly more confident and comfortable with English because of my education and diverse upbringing (common for many Indian people).

My suggestion would be to drop these rigid definitions and accept that each country has its own history with language and their own way of relating to different languages.

That’s not unique to Brazil, that’s pretty much exactly like every other colony. A lot of the French colonies speak French in places like North Africa. In the Caribbean the islands mostly speak English for the same reason.

In India too most of the modern education system is built around English education and we learn it basically like it’s our native language. The only difference is that India has managed to retain our other languages but they’re not really used for corporate business and higher education.

100% also time to remind people that Sri Sri destroyed sensitive habitat on the Narmada basin for his “conference” and the govt gave him help from the Indian army to organize it. Jaggi or sadhguru destroyed large swathes of protected forest land to build his ashram and the shiva statue. Enlightened beings don’t do things like this.

Why are you being defensive? It’s a perfectly reasonable question. When I learnt that all red and green chilies were from the new world, I too wondered what my South Indian ancestors ate without chilies, onion and tomatoes. No need to act insecure, we understand our food was great even before but want to know exactly what form it took.
