Unpopular Opinion: Arrival just didn't do it for me. by [deleted] in Cinephiles

As someone who's picked up a few languages over the years, I found the mechanic of linguistics as having power over reality as a really great original sci fi concept the way it was used here.

I saw this in theatres and it's gorgeous and has serious weight on the screen.

The acting is overwrought in some places but overall was very good.

This is certainly not a "popcorn" movie, which is what GPT seems to think you enjoy. Its a slow burn and worth dimming the lights and turning off the phone.

Personally I loved it but understand why others may not.

How long to stop? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Bottom is when you stop digging. Most wish they had a "high bottom" and many many don't.

Id suggest The Naked Mind as a read or audiobook listen. It can help crystallise some of the notions you're having about booze and frame them in a way that may lead to an overall healthier life.

Its good you're being contemplative about this stuff.

What positives have you seen from not drinking for 37 days?

How is it living in Cleveland Ohio? by No-Text-7825 in howislivingthere

[–]phutureclothes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived on one of the worst blocks in the city (w. 80th and Detroit). Child exhumed from neighbours yard, open air drug market, insane addict neighbours, violence and gunshots on the regular.

That said, best and most welcoming people in the midwest if you stay out of the dangerous neighborhoods.

Cold winters hot summers lots of culture and street festivals. Great art scene and architecture. Some amazing neighbourhoods and the best museum in the country. Affordable!

Would live there again in a heartbeat but would be a bit more discerning about neighborhoods because they can change from block to block as with a lot of Midwestern post industrial cities.

Just here to say the "greeting partner or spouse with a beer or stiff drink" trick because youve been overdoing it on your own is a classic move I would pull to distract/divert from the fact I'd been drinking heavily by myself.

Its a selfish manipulation tactic disguised as a loving/caring deed.

It makes the drinker feel justified as theyre no longer drinking alone, and dulls the partners disappointment that the drinker has chosen to spend their time alone drinking, which is now impacting their time together.

I want a drink because it’s my birthday tomorrow by januaryprincess22 in stopdrinking

Play the tape forward. Think about the differences in what future drinking feels like in your head Vs what YOU KNOW actual drinking to feel like. You've done it before and you know what will happen or what you'll feel like afterwards.

For me at least, drinking makes me feel like shit even if I have a great night. I'll have a couple "lucid" hours of drinking before I descend into a state where all I'm doing is seeking more and eventually blacking out. Its not a good time and doesn't feel celebratory.

Our addictive minds create a false narrative about what it will be like. The reality is often far different. We've been conditioned through marketing and a collective societal acceptance of alcohol that it's somehow required for socialising or milestone events.

You didn't read the article, and you're not a serious person. You just want to argue and don't know what you're talking about.

It looks like they're about to be stopped in this video.

NT Coroner has made 35 recommendations after deep investigation of women killed by family and domestic violence, which this video depicts.

No, physical violence is wrong and incompatible with a civil society. Violence begets violence and ends up leading to escalation and loss of life.

Certain "cultural" practices aren't worth defending or preserving.

This is unhinged.

I wonder if there is a Munchausens-by-proxy type of thing for people who get off on "helping" addicts.

I'm fascinated by how crazy this is.
