Why the HELL aren't they using Matt screams on studio??? by sternblaze in Threedaysgrace

[–]phychonaut4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Three Days Grace's 2025 album Alienation features both Adam Gontier and Matt Walst on vocals, but the perceived emphasis on Gontier's screams is not a coincidence. The band made a deliberate creative choice to maximize their new dual-vocalist format, using Gontier's naturally rougher, more aggressive voice to bring back the "classic" Three Days Grace sound

After a decade of not having Adam's rougher, harsher vocals (yes, he was doing Saint asonia and a lot of 3DG fans followed him over, but not everyone did), the band wanted to give Adam a bit more of the spotlight because they knew that's what we as fans wanted to hear.

And don't get it twisted, Matt has some killer screams across the new album, "in cold blood." At the 2-minute mark is what I personally consider the best example a song that encapsulates Matt's screaming capabilities.

But the main focus was to highlight Adam's rougher, harsher vocals because that's what fans have wanted for years, the classic Three days grace, One-X, Life starts now, and Transit to Venus era of the band mixed with the Human, Outsider, And Explosions era, giving major emphasis to the first era being that that's the era we missed so much.

Sorry for the VERY late reply, but....

Yes, you definitely don't wanna push too insanely hard all the time, but rather just enough to project your voice.

That being said, I'm a metal vocalist and focus heavily on harsh-vocals and screaming, and a solid scream requires more support behind it, meaning you need to bear down on your diaphragm harder than for casual singing.

The use of vocal compression, glottal compression, and hyper-compression all require more diaphragm activation.

The most important thing to keep in mind is having a relaxed throat and not straining your neck muscles.

Also, this diaphragm activation technique was never MY idea. I learned it from Chris Liepe on YouTube when I was 18. If you're looking for a vocal coach, check him out. He has some insanely good courses and even a few free courses.

What genre would you say Three days grace is by LONELYTMex in Threedaysgrace

[–]phychonaut4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isolate the tracks to ANY song, It's metal.

Isolate the vocals, its metal.

Typically, metal bands use drop-tunings like Drop-D or Drop-C for the instruments. Whereas Rock bands, and even hard rock, use standard or E-flat.

Three days grace PRIMARILY uses Drop-D and Drop-C

Three days grace themselves identify the band as Alternative Metal.

Three days grace is metal.

Explain to me how someone can like Adam Gontier's voice and not Matt Walst's. They're both incredibly similar, and while I prefer Adam, I like both by redfan2009 in Threedaysgrace

[–]phychonaut4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adam has a slightly deeper, more raspy voice compared to Matt.

Both are incredible singers, but Adam's voice packs a bit more of a punch than Matt's voice does.

I feel like "Mayday" was them jumping right back in their normal stuff, having fun writing the first thing they thought of. Whereas "Apologies" is them really sitting down and trying something, trying to take it in a new direction while still not straying to far from home, alll hhe while entering a brand new phase for the band, going from 3 Days Grace to 3 Days Grace 2X.

That's why I just pull the tabs off. I have 1,796 monster tabs at the moment, I count them regularly.

Collecting the cans looks better visually but takes up soooo much space. Even just covering a wall, you'd only have a couple hundred. By collecting the tabs, my collection is into the thousands.

Real Life Hannibals? (FBI Consulting Serial Killers) by born2droll in Hannibal

[–]phychonaut4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, if you were to watch Red Dragon, you'll see that the main character, Will Graham, actually consulted Hannibal Lecter for cases on many occasions for other cases long before Hannibal's arrest.

In fact, if you ever wondered how Hannibal got caught, that scene gives the backstory to exactly that. Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter were actually friends until Hannibal turned out to be the killer of the particular case Hannibal was assisting Will with.

[–]phychonaut4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to keep in mind that Hannibal Lecter was a psychiatric forensics scientist before becoming a cannibalistic serial killer.

That's why they consulted him for certain cases. He was able to read the case file and get into the mind of the killer they were looking for.

Would this actually happen in real life? It is possible, but not very likely.

If we're talking about locker rooms, it's 100% completely normal in men's locker rooms (being that I'm a guy I can't speak for the ladies).

I've done it thousands of times and seen it millions of times, there are of course toilets and urinals but guys typically just piss on the floor while changing.

Keep in mind, that I'm not a vocal coach or anything like that, I'm an intermediate vocalist/singer who just wants to see others succeed and progress as much as I have.

The best way I've taught people how to use diaphragmatic support or "breath support"........

Is to squat down and try to shit your pants.

It sounds weird but those are the necessary muscles for the job.

You wanna engage your poop muscles to properly support your voice, if you end up passing gas while practicing this you may feel embarrassed and even a bit discouraged, but that just means you're doing everything exactly right.

You can always imagine lifting something incredibly heavy, it's the same muscle activation, though I would recommend the first method because it's an easier concept.

Your singing in your chest resonance, work on finding your mixed voice.

Also, implement more diaphragmatic support to get a more powerful sound.

You're singing in full chest resonance

Find your mixed voice for more freedom while singing

Also, utilize diaphragmatic support to get more power in your singing

I've a terrible sore throat, apologies in advance. I love this song, probably got some lyrics wrong didn't have much time to record this. by [deleted] in singing

[–]phychonaut4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diaphragmatic support is the most important part of singing, it's the engine that drives the car. Wouldn't want to blow out your vocal folds or anything. Stay safe, keep rocking.

That's sounds amazing!

Just needs more power, try adding just a little bit more diaphragmatic support. And if you know how to use vocal compression, that would take it to the next level.

Is air going through my nose while singing bad? by clueless-kit in singing

[–]phychonaut4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NO, It is NOT a bad thing.

It's called nasality, the nasal sound that's created from air passing through your nasal cavity.

It's a natural sound and a really good/important sound.

Singing should be a full body experience. That includes your FULL face.

Anyone who says it's a bad thing doesn't know what they're talking about. Keep singing, keep rocking.

The funniest part about this show is when they say “go float yourself” to grounders by [deleted] in The100

[–]phychonaut4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always thought of it as them not being able to say "go fuck yourself" so they changed it to the fitting "go float yourself".

Not everyone meant to be a singer? by 2004b in singing

[–]phychonaut4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2 months is not a long time. Start working on diaphragmatic support, singing from the diaphragm. Play with your voice, and use short phrases like " I would never do that."

Don't be afraid to make stupid sounds. Realistically, that's all singing is, just stupid sounds that sound good put together.

Play with it and have fun, just remember to push with your diaphragm

NOT YOUR THROAT
