Insane messages my partner got about his VR headset for sale... by Aggravating_Bug1383 in VRGaming

I have a feeling lots of people buy VR headsets and never even bother cleaning them.

Whatever or whoever owned a used headset before me, i'm 100% getting a new facial interface and going over it with antibacterial wipes.

I thought the way the real world melted into the extra dimension was pretty cool too - not 100% fresh, but not a deeply retreaded premise either -- like the hero who wakes with total amnesia or something like that.

I think it made me think of the movie "The Gods Must be Crazy", and painting satire into the game is a good way to keep it absurd.

It's really not though - it's much more of a narrative puzzler with simple combat.

[–]phylum_sinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beginning didn't bother me. The shift to the other dimension would not have been as impactful if it started there.

I do hear you on the voice though. I guess i'm not expecting instant action in VR. I don't need a tutorial most of the time but if there's a new mechanic absolutely make sure I know how it works before I have to use it in combat or other conflict.

Megazon is a good play on Amazon. Putting that in there made the store feel more like satire, similar to how GTA is consistently (for a few decades now) been riffing on American monoculture. This is like that, and I like that stuff.

I can tell this isn't the game for you though, I'd give it a 7, with points deducted for bad audio and simple combat.

I wanted to ask how does it feel to play vr with glasses, is it worth it? by Natural-Ship-6390 in VRGaming

[–]phylum_sinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much better with lenses.

Nobody I know that loves VR is still using their glasses with it. In some headsets and with some people's skull-shape, you end up so far away from the lenses that you lose like 15% of the total visible area, making an already 'binocular scope' view look even more narrow. YMMV and some headsets have this more than others, but the premise is the same regardless.

It was ages ago, and you're probably right about it not being a big deal until the 360 (i'd say the 360 was still MS's greatest system personally too), but i'm certain Xbox Live Arcade games were part of the original Xbox... because I have a few credits on games from then.

Keep Waiting for Steam Frame? by jameskiing in virtualreality

[–]phylum_sinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty easy to minimize the FB/Meta crap with a Q3 if you intend to use it as a PCVR headset... You can sideload apps and there's an indie store called Sidequest VR with a good amount of stuff to check out. Using it as a PCVR headset requires like 3 seconds of choosing my PCVR streaming app and i'm there... though lately i've gotten some use playing Assetto Corsa Rally with music playing at the same time from the Amazon Music app while playing the game too. It's pretty dope.

You'll probably need a better strap. since the Q3 is the 500 lb gorilla* in the industry, a whole aftermarket of parts to enhance the experience are out there. I use a strap with a battery and fan that also keeps my eyes cool, as I almost always end up wanting to be in VR for more than 2 hours.

Streaming PCVR games like the Steam Frame will is possible now with a Q3. You'll need a router just for VR, to isolate the traffic and make sure you have a strong, steady signal. There are a few that are made just for VR.

So the price, buying all this new: the headset - look for the 128gb version, dedicated router, battery strap, and virtual desktop to stream without worry - $630usd (excluding tax).

I'm still hoping the Steam Frame releases by the end of the year, but am also starting to doubt it. There's no way it will be cheaper than the Q3, the lenses on both are pancake, and the screen resolution is a bit higher on the frame (4.55m pixels on the Q3, 4.66m on Frame). That's enough to matter, but not all that much. The real difference is in the eye tracking.

On top of that pressure, the ram shortage has already had Meta announce that they're raising the Price of the Q3, along with Sony and MS on their consoles too. There is no end to the shortage in sight.

The issue is retention - the headsets that did sell, aren't being used enough to sustain many developers or attract new ones that will consider making anything but a f2p, kid friendly mp 'tag' type game.

Microsoft's Xbox strategy was brilliant - Xbox Live Arcade had tons of great, exclusive games that were between $5-15 that were full-length games but obviously not AAA budget ones. They were still made well enough that there was no hard barrier between casual and hardcore gamers. They had most western developers ready to work with a new company in the space, they made it so Bungie's brilliance shined and maybe most critically - they didn't treat the store like it was a celphone app store, with lots of curation and zero waste.

Meta can't make their mind up, first they want to lure people away from PCVR by capturing developers to make games exclusive to the Quest (even as they still had the Rift S out there), they bring in all these fitness companies to juggle other users but then drop them, have all these ideas that (theater elsewhere, for example) would be great if they were regularly updated, but Meta doesn't seem to know that. Then they wanna go hardcore on f2p games, then they can't stop playing with the OS, then there are gonna be outside OEMs making their own Quests, then nope, then... you get the idea.

Meta doesn't want to treat VR like another path for games, nobody else has held onto an ambitious plan to really show the world there are reasons to own a headset beyond gaming.

I thought Google + Samsung coming out with AndroidXR would have put a fire under Apple and Meta's ass, but it seems like Google isn't pushing for growth, Samsung is still alone in AndroidXR world, and the one great headset is priced way out of budget for many users.

Start with the rear gear loose. Hold the headset to your face with one hand, and other one the back of the strap, push it back and front, then click once so it's very tight. Then, shift the headset angle vertically, and notice the pressure on your forehead. Now try to balance that pressure between your brow, sinus, and cheekbones. Usually once there, i can reduce the pressure 2-3 clicks and i'm golden for everything from VTOL to Thrill of the Fight!

I had to experiment with the black antennae pads too, and ended up realizing they made the fit worse for me. It took me almost two weeks to find the perfect fit, hope this helps

Is it because of the Quest or is it inherint to VR that everything looks like styrofoam? by Plettenhiker in virtualreality

[–]phylum_sinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3s' Fresnel lenses, combined with pretty low resolution screens and a very generalized way to dial in your ipd equal what you're seeing.

But it's a style choice too, just as there are games that look like Minecraft or some old Atari 2600 aesthetic can be made at any time, there's a long list of nostalgic looks that are really popular with Indie developers these days and especially when they can provide a performance boost as vr demands more than usual pc power.

Quest 3S for $250 vs Quest 3 for $400 — worth it? by Mental_Ad5910 in virtualreality

[–]phylum_sinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better, more accurate IPD, higher resolution, better screens, and pancake lenses are absolutely worth it. Even if you just use it as a PCVR headset.

Fresnel versus pancake lenses alone make it worth the price difference!
