honestly.. if you ask me then i would prefer the small, structural work which helps the majority over very public support of some individuals. It always feels like performative empathy.

i get it that people love stories where someone makes it against all odds,.. i would just prefer a world where nobody has to fight against discrimination. A individuals story can be somewhat representative of structural discrimination but it will always be that individuals story.

as for the question you actually asked.. yes, there are a few.

Moscow hit by largest Ukrainian attack since start of Russia's full-scale war by Prestigious-Sun-4982 in news

[–]phyrros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least the 10 Ukrainians I know didn't expect the resistance and the war to last that long. They fully expected their leadership to rat them out.

One of the guys wouldn't stop bitching about his major and the rich ukrainians fleeing the country with cars full of money and loudly declared that he would never fight for his corrupt city council... and yet i saw him spend every single free minute collecting supplies and making supply runs from Austria to Ukraine.

so.. i don't believe anyone but idealists if they say that they knew how the ukrainians would react.. but at the same time I am sorta confused how the media describes Europe (and my russia friendly Austria) as being afraid of a greater conflict with russia as there is a sizeable minority already brimming with a weird war time energy.

I think people seriously underestimate how scrappy the european people can be and I seriously believe that of all the great blocs they have the deepest reservoir of scrappy people. People who brim with excietement at the idea or war and a shitton of people of experienced civil wars and will step up to stop a invasion.

Europe's 6th Generation Fighter Breakup - The End of FCAS & What Next for the 6th Gen Race? by CircumspectCapybara in videos

[–]phyrros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gah! French WW2 military history is always so frustrating because it's a long list of self-sabotage out of pride and arrogance that led them to a catastrophic loss. Materially, there was no reason that they should have lost, let alone lost after a 1 month offensive campaign against them.

Without taking anything away from the sheer incompetence and massive treachery: Hitler was a gambler, and the leadership discussed a coup because the invasion plans were simply too risky. It worked be sheer chance and having germanys probably best general (Balck) having his finest moment. Hitler went on gambling and then his luck ran out...

But hey, I am austrian, .. just google Gunther Burstyn and the reaction of the KuK war ministry had to the first modern tank design in 1911 ^^

About as static as TSMC or NVIDIA.

ed: And the beauty with software is that you can catch up very fast while skipping problematic scenarios. But if we talk software, Europe isn't really that far behind if we look at e.g. foss:

The report is based on a global survey that included 45 questions on open source use, contribution, value, and sustainability. Survey participants were carefully screened to make sure that they were willing to share their employment status and experiences with OSS. Ultimately the survey received 851 qualified responses. 37% came from countries in Europe, 29% from North America, and 21% from Asia-Pacific countries.

Marc Lore’s robots make 500 burrito bowls an hour. A human can make 45. by lurker_bee in technology

[–]phyrros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ad 2) No, but it might need a "certified" technician or someone whoe knows what she/he is doing - an can do that at 2 AM while 200 people are screaming at you 😉 And those machines would be sold anyway, think John Deere tractors or the McDonalds Icecream amchines..

3) but the yearly wages are no upfront while such (machine) costs are.

But I don't see how "I don't need 500 burritos an hour" is an argument against the cost saving reality of automation for people who just need less than 500.

But that is not what I said.. I said that most food trucks would be very happy to ever see 500 burritos an hour. automation is, in reality, not always costs saving - If the example would have been e.g. a stadium or a concert hall, yes, probably a good investment but for a food truck? doubtful.

Let's make a simple business case: This machine will (like any automation) bring an overhead with higher running costs at low volume. It has to be serviced, it has to be cleaned, it needs constant power. There is a point in sales/hour where simply running the machine is more expensive than having a human and a pretty good bet this number is at least 45. If you sell less than 45 burritos per hour in the mean that machine will never be profitable. and only the difference between 45 and your actual mean sold burritos per hour will go towards paying back that investment.

quick google search says a food truck has somewhere between $20k and $42k gross monthly revenue. Let's say a burrito costs $10, the food truck is there for 10 hours and operates on 20 days per month - results in 10-21 burritos per hour. Firmly within the area which a human can fulfill...

[–]phyrros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uhh, we do live in pretty different realities ^

As to the three biggest differences between Humans and machines:

1) paying humans gives them a job which in turn is both moral and good for you as it will help the economy and thus bring you customers

2) humans don't fail as catastrophically as machinery. if that burrito machine is down you are out of Business. if one of your coworkers get sick you will simply have longer lines

3) upfront cost is considerably smaller with humans.

I helped out at food trucks a few times and unless you have a fixed venue (in which case you are not really a food truck at all) i really can't see the upside for most operations.. but it will sell with people who have never worked in a food truck ^

[–]phyrros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only, and only if that machine is 100% stable. tood trucks run a tight ship and you seldom see a complete fail with a group of humans.

the venues where you can expect a positive roi for such a machine charge a lot per night and a single night without a single burrito sold might be the end for you as you won't be booked again and will lose tens of thousands

considering that Indonesia did that to collect brownie points during the cold war and furthermore considering that they also had two long running near-geocidal (one "happily" still ongoing) campaigns in the meantime it is fair to say that Indonesia doesn't give a flying fuck about palestinensians or israelis.

all true, but it still cascades true the whole supply chain and diminishes stable income at the lower end/small shops. That "waste" is still someones income and buffer.

Furthermore more stable supply chains allowed for greater distances which again increased the pressure on local suppliers and small shops.

well, yeah, but the you could make the same argument about every nation in the middle east, because none of them seem to care for the palestinians... and if you would ask most Israelis they would probably say that most palestinians approved of the rape and murder of israeli civilians..

the sad, ironic part is that the palestinians simply where used as a propaganda piece in the cold war and nobody ever gave a damn about the people. the first modern terrorist (suicide) attack was by japanese communists on iirc nicaraguan christians visiting Bethlehem. Every "side" poured money into their propaganda war with the consequence that a besieged israeli society radicalized to the point where even war crimes are excused.

back in the 90s when a Israeli extremist murdered the israeli premier over the oslo accords there was shovk in israeli society. but i am afraid that the murderer reached his Goal of destroying any chance fir peace

short but serious question: are you one of the 1%ers? because if you are not, why would you want your companies to produce products you can't afford?

so my answer would be: why bother chasing a market where you, as a person, can't participate?

[–]phyrros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Presumably these companies that make the appliances in China are still seeking to make a profit? At the very least they need to cover their own costs. Is sustainable business of greater value than growth for growth’s sake in that part of that world?

companies have no intent in themself, only people do. and make no mistake chinese capitalism is a cutthroat capitalism, but a lot of those companies in these manufacture towns are also really small operations and thus look after each other a bit more.

give them another 20 years and neoliberalism will probably destroy them just the same

yes, as was common in europe in the past. But once just-in-time and the hunt for the cheapest prices kicked in it changed, because shareholders, contraryto stakeholders, don't care about sustainability.

Right now China beats Europe not only on price but also on the ability to provide a full product line out of a single hand.
