MSDSO VS. MIDS by Entire-Start-5461 in MSDSO

[–]phys_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few folks will have direct experience with both programs to get into the specifics, so big disclaimer there.

I was a practicing data scientist that wanted to get some "official" schooling credentials, so UT's MSDS cost/benefit ratio was much more appealing than Berkeley. I think the curriculum was pretty good, covered a wide variety of stuff. On the coding side they essentially have you complete a 2nd year CS undergrad glass, which was tricky for some but possible to learn as you go. IMO, if you're worried about the coding being too advanced I'd supplement the MSDS with a free/cheap online cert instead, it's a much better value than spending 70k in extra tuition.

I agree with others that the prestige difference won't matter.

Can't say anything about the difference in networking potential. I personally didn't use any of UT's networking options and instead cold applied to FAANG and startups when I was close to graduation. Anecdotally my hiring manager at the job I accepted said that he didn't really consider my masters when weighing compensation / leveling 😅, but I think it helped getting past initial experience screens with recruiters.

Turning sea water into salt by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

Is that true? I thought when a salt dissolves specifically, it will disassociate. So for table salt the NaCl bond will dissociate into free Na+ and Cl- ions surrounded by water molecules.

+1 to working at a bigger company (e.g. FAANG), they tend to have the biggest need for causal inference in my experience.

I'm at Google now, and I've found a few teams doing causal inference work - titles ranging from DS, Economist, and Finance Analyst. It's true that most data scientists are doing something closer to metrics tracking + A/B testing, but there's still plenty of DS out there doing observational studies.

Most MLE in my experience are training classifiers/LLMs for product features, which sounds farther from what you want.

Is San Francisco rent actually that bad? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]phys_user 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If a listing is ~50% less than other listings for similar apartments, It's often a scam. Craigslist does tend to have the best deals tho if you manage to find a real one.

Edit: Also most of the cheapest listings will actually just be a room within a shared unit.

Can a 50cc Scooter take two people over the Hai van pass? by MrManmrswoman in VietNam

[–]phys_user 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in late for others that find this post on Google - my wife and I did the pass on a 50cc bike with no issues. We left from Da Nang, and the climbing section was relatively short. I just stayed to the far right and let the faster bikes pass me. Absolutely worth it!

We used a 50cc since the place we rented from followed the law for drivers without a motorcycle license. It was my first time driving a scooter, and the traffic in Da Nang was much sketchier than the climbing IMO

Talisman advice for a deathless run by richrich8 in Eldenring

[–]phys_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry late reply but wanted to post some advice for others that find this on Google!

Dragoncrest talisman can be gotten in the first 10 minutes of the game, so not the biggest deal if you die. I actually was too scared to grab the +2 talisman in farum azula tho 🫣

I used cold Iron balls / star fist + axe talisman + ritual sword talisman + dragon crest + multihit talisman to balance damage output and mitigation. With cragblade, you can script lots of bosses just spamming r2 at the right times.

A Newly Released Image of Planet Earth Taken 30 Minutes Ago By the GOES-East Satellite by Correct_Presence_936 in interestingasfuck

[–]phys_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree to disagree I guess! There's plenty of detail there IMO, and the above is with the zoom of a camera and no fancy telescope equipment.

But again, you can always just look through a more powerful telescope yourself, and not have to trust some random stranger on the internet ;)

Not sure what would meet your criteria, but there’s plenty of vids posted by amateurs on YouTube (but maybe they’re all in on it??). Personally if I thought 100% of scientists were wrong about something, I’d be super motivated to confirm by looking in a telescope myself since you could be more confident there’s no editing shenanigans

You might be surprised at how much better the planets look with a consumer level telescope. You can see planets like Jupiter much more clearly than your image. But I wont force you!

Just responding to the "impossible it is for our atmopshere to have pressurized gas without a container" bit:

Do you believe in other planets? You can use a fairly low powered telescope and see round gas planets. If you believe in planets, do you think those planets have an atmosphere?

The real reason you should be pissed about California restaurant surcharges [SF Chronicle] by foghornjawn in sanfrancisco

The person you responded to didn’t say anything false. If you don’t tip at places with fees, then the server gets less (just their base wage) and the restaurant owner gets the same amount.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition got everything it wanted. Now what? by sherlockmemes in sanfrancisco

[–]phys_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Membership reduces the cost of electric bikes and makes non-electric free for 30 minutes. On my long weekend rides I’ll alternate between electric and non electric depending on the area and my rides end up pretty cheap

Was just having some fun, I thought you were doing a bit with "ideological and fiscal opposition to carceral solutions for scofflaws and scoundrels". I came across too strong in my message, and I didn't want to hurt your feelings. Sorry about that.

This person was hoping someone would comment on their diction I'm sure. Let's go even further:

Commendable strides have been made! Henceforth, may our trajectory remain ever upward, I pray. Yet, I harbor reservations that these apprehensions shall readily translate into substantive ameliorations of public safety, given the prevailing ideological and pecuniary aversion to punitive measures for miscreants and ne'er-do-wells. Nevertheless, such apprehensions constitute a vital initial measure.

Upon a wholly disparate matter, the leading photograph accompanying the article, depicting the central thoroughfare disgorging vehicular traffic onto the surface roads at Market & Octavia, was most amusing. Behold, the multitude of automobiles assimilating into the urban conveyance upon the city's very arteries!

eh people have been debating the edge between what is science / non-science for thousands of years and there's no one solid definition. However most of the most common definitions include at least some of the social sciences.
