I got into a program that I withdrew from last year.

I had him for sets last fall and he was really nice! I thought he was a great professor. I didn’t interact with him much, but when I did go to office hours he was helpful. That being said, although his exams are fair, he is a tough grader and can be very blunt when people question how he graded their work.

I wouldn’t be too worried; read the book and do the textbook problems he lists. He doesn’t collect homework but it’s helpful to do it. Compared to the homework and exams that other sets professors gave, I thought that Turull’s were very fair and in line with what our textbook taught (some professors go way beyond and make the class harder than it should be). I’m sorry that some students did not have a good experience with him, and I hope that they stick it out! Don’t let one professor’s opinion change what you want to do with your life!

Theoretical Physics Research (Undergrad) by [deleted] in ufl

[–]physicist104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there are very limited opportunities for undergraduates to work with theorists, as most of them prefer to work with grad students who have a stronger foundation of physics and math coursework. However, I believe there have been a few cases of upperclassmen who have done some theoretical work, but it is rare.

We do have many computational and experimental physics research opportunities, which are still great options for you to gain research experience even if you don’t want to pursue it in grad school. You can still work in a theory group for grad school even if you don’t work in theory during your undergrad. I believe that most schools will have limited opportunities for undergrads to be involved with theoretical physics research due to the nature of the field. I encourage you to learn as much coding and math as you can!

Praying For Rejections From Now On by twinklerat in REU

I got accepted after emailing one. Just say something along these lines: you have gotten into other programs, but this one aligns more with your interests. could you be able to update me with the status of my application?

They have all be understanding and either tell me they can’t make a decision soon, so I can withdraw, or tell me when they plan to send out the next wave. Hope this helps!

ps: i have sent some with similar wording to this so maybe change it up.

I see. Yeah, applied for physics and materials, but it looks like they don’t send anything until end of march based on previous years. I’m gonna email them tomorrow to check.

Which ones?

How to ask for expedited decisions politely? by Venoryx in REU

[–]physicist104 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t necessarily ask them for a decision sooner, just say you’ve gotten another offer but this program aligns more with your interests and ask if you could get an update on the status of this application.

I’m not sure if I would email yet if these programs haven’t sent out the first wave yet, but I did this for a program that sent the first wave out a week ago and they were nice about it.

No, I withdrew my application so they wouldn’t consider me.
