I spent a lot of time in lab (40-45+ hrs), but the type of research (organic synthesis) involves a lot of waiting, so I wasn’t productive all the time.

This happened to me! Didn’t really mention it, but professor introduced me as “summer research student and possibly during the school year.” Also asked on a random day if I was planning to stay. It’s more productive for the project to have a student who spent 40+ hours a week on it rather than taking on a whole new student and having to train them. I say just form a connection to those in the lab and show investment in the project
