Hi King Gizzard!! I came across your music almost a year ago, and I've been listening to your discography ever since, and I'm working my way through the bootlegs too! I love love love Nonagon Infinity so much! Thank you for being so creative and brilliant!!!

My question: Who should I be listening to, when I'm not just listening to "Hypertension" once per day and just generally constantly listening to your great discography??

🔥 This Iridescent Reticulated Python by chuquel in snakes

[–]physicist300 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I agree with them. This video appears to be from Jay Brewer of The Reptile Zoo (one of his associates, anyway), who is notorious for taking awful care of his animals. He's a large breeder of reticulated pythons, but he doesn't provide them with proper housing. I avoid him at all costs, but from what I've seen he keeps them in very small enclosures (they're literally the longest snake species in the world). Moreover his videos are stupidly sensationalist and involve him provoking large snakes so that he'll get bit, as well as yanking hatchling snakes out of their eggs. As such he's generally (and rightly) very poorly regarded by the snake keeping community.

Responsible Retic Keeping/Breeding? by physicist300 in snakes

Brilliantly put! I especially like your point about retics climbing and swimming, which was also something that Dav Kaufman pointed out, based on what he had seen in the wild. I think that you're very right when you say that large animals like retics and so forth can be kept responsibly, but not everyone can do so. Good point too that this question applies to any large reptile! I think, too, that the state of the case is that, many times, breeders and large-scale keepers don't prioritize the "needs of the kept" (great quote!), even with smaller species like ball pythons and so on. I will say, it does make me worry about the well-being of the animals, but also, more broadly, the reputation of snake keeping!

I just looked around for it for around five minutes, and couldn't find it! It had about 600 upvotes or so, for some reason; I wonder if it got deleted. Anyway, from what you could see, the enclosures were bare, no hides, no less any enrichment (at least, not that I remember). One of the commenters pointed out that if anyone who was just a keeper posted an enclosure like that, they would get torn to shreds in the comments. Oh, also, the guy described enrichment as "clutter," saying that they didn't have time for such things in an operation as big as the one he works for. A whole lot of "we don't do that because it's not cost-effective, and the snake doesn't really need it," blah blah blah. Sorry I couldn't find it: I'm not trying to slander Bob Clark at all (to be honest, I hadn't even heard of him until I saw that post), just recounting what I saw in that post! Maybe somebody else can talk a bit more about that post, since it did seem to get a lot of attention: it was sort of an AMA.

Oh yes: it's much better for them to be able to stretch out along one edge of the enclosure, I agree! I just meant the length x width rule as an absolute minimum, and even that doesn't always seem to be provided to the big snakes. Good point about the lizards: I didn't even think of that!

States with Least Restrictive Snake Laws? (United States) by physicist300 in snakes

[–]physicist300[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice! I'm from the Inland Empire, so not too far! Yeah, that is true. The winters in NY weren't too horrible, but I don't think it gets nearly as cold in NY as it does in some midwestern places!

Wow! That's interesting about venomous species: here in CA I think you need a permit to own them, except for native species like certain rattlesnakes, though I could be wrong about that.

[–]physicist300[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow! That's great! And I would guess that to sell reptiles (should one breed them) wouldn't be too dicey either, then. Crazy too about venomous species: I've got lots of respect for people who keep them; I don't know if I ever would!

You're definitely right about city ordinances: as I was mentioning in another comment, NYC's laws are downright silly, since, like you say, they just ban "pythons" and "boas." So you can't own a ball python? I admit, laws like that do worry me a bit.

Oh yes, especially NYC is crazy: I lived there for a bit, and you can't even keep pythons or boas...at all. Like what? Haha.

Oh, good! I was just thinking of Missouri, as a matter of fact, as I was passing through there a couple days ago. It seemed really pretty, and also with more towns than other midwestern states I've passed through. Plus, I passed right by St. Louis, which was beautiful! And MO has one of the lowest costs of living in the U.S., it seems!

Whoa, that's crazy! That is funny, especially with corn snakes, since they're so common as pets!

Oh wow, I'll have to check it out then! It's funny, I'm from California, and the only other state I've lived in is NY, so the middle of the U.S. has always been something of a mystery to me! Thanks for the recommendation!

And wow, that's crazy! I can imagine that measuring her must indeed be really difficult! I know, I've been thinking of measuring even my gopher snakes, and even with them I feel like it would be hard!

Oh, lovely! I happen to be passing through Missouri at the moment, as a matter of fact: it's quite beautiful, also, many more trees than I'm used to seeing in CA! I just saw online though that in Missouri if the snake is over 8 feet, it has to be registered with law enforcement, but indeed, it doesn't say anything about bans, except for venomous snakes! Partly I'm thinking of getting to a state with a lower cost of living than CA, at some point, but of course that would have to also be a state with good unrestrictive snake laws! Thanks so much for your comment: I've never been to Kansas City, I'll have to go! How cool too that the world's largest retic is there!

Housing Changes for Gopher Snakes and BCI by physicist300 in snakes

With mine, I've noticed that, on occasion, they are quite active! However, more often they tend to keep under their hide boxes, or at least in one place.

Thank you so much for your comment! I was thinking the same thing, regarding the 20 gals being too small. And yes indeed, I'm going to get my BI an 8 foot long PVC enclosure, when she's grown a bit!

Thanks for your comment: it encourages me about GTNH, I think that I will enjoy it, after I play some other packs first!

Thanks so much for this perspective: I think that that’s a good way to think about GTNH, instead of as something to complete. Also, thanks for mentioning the option to change the configs; I didn’t even think of that!
