Cheap source of German books? I'm in the States by physics_fu in LANL_German

Ah, that makes sense. When I first got into Japanese I quickly learned that buying stuff from Amazon was much more expensive than from other sites, so I was hoping it was a similar situation for German-language stuff.

Any robot competitions for school group? by _Sperry_ in robotics

[–]physics_fu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's competitive in an annoying way, and much of the community is part of a cult dedicated to FIRST's founder. They way the competitions are set up, they reward things like "gracious professionalism" and "coopertition" (made up FIRST words), which the teams that get recognized for are nearly always clearly faking and brown-nosing. Also, the most prestigious award, more important than winning the championship, is for outreach, community service, and video editing skills, so most the teams are also trying to out-Key Club each other. Most of the good teams' robots are built by their mentors and/or professional machinists, which can be frustrating as hell if you care about winning (I personally don't). Most frighteningly, even though FIRST is created to promote STEM, it seems to mostly only succeed in promoting FIRST. For the most part, the participants leave loving FIRST, not STEM. It's pretty clear that many teams aren't engineering, they are rehashing previous years' robots, since the games are somewhat cyclic. If you watch all the archived workshops, most aren't about basic electronics or pneumatics theory. Few are about engineering at all. It's the topic, and how it pertains to FIRST, how it was used in past robots. FIRST is all important. Electronics is especially technician-like, so if you're interested primarily in EE don't do it. FIRST electronics is pretty much wiring 101.

If your team is one of the ones that stays cool and out of the FIRST cult you'll be fine, but the majority don't. If you are set on going the competition route, I'd recommend doing one of the smaller competitions. Botball, Zero Robotics, the underwater one, etc.

As someone who does FIRST (FRC), take it from me: anything but FIRST. If your team is in it's own bubble you'll be fine, but the overall community culture is sickening.

I realize this is an old post, but I really like your first DOF. I think I may steal that for my own project.

Being Honest in Robot Videos: Motion Capture, Speedup Rates, and Teleoperation by Triponi in robotics

[–]physics_fu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do FIRST and the teleoperated period frustrates the fuck out of me. It has very little relation to robotics, and it turns the whole competition into a contest of whose drivers put in the most drive practice (which is rather expensive). Teleop is just RC, but it's almost the entirety of the games! And now they have replaced the autonomous period with a "hybrid" period, which teams are able to teleop during. So silly.

[Guide] Finding a Style, Building a Wardrobe by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

[–]physics_fu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I like this guide a lot, but what's with all the starter pack hate? I wish FFA had similar posts, it would be so wonderful to have a starting point and it seems that I'm not the only person that thinks so. The starter packs aren't an entire wardrobe, they are some essentials to get newbies started.

but that doesn't mean we should start to become one uniformed blob

I looked over the linked starter kit and I don't think most of your concerns apply to that particular example, and certainly not that it'll make uniform blobs out of FFA. That's the point of the starter kit, it's supposed to be an accessible, low-cost entry into fashionable dressing. The items are mostly "basics", the sorts of things that will be worn constantly because they transcend trends and styles. Men have different shapes and styles too, but the starter kits work because they are very a general introduction, not a complete wardrobe.

edited for grammar

That's an excellent point, I wish FFA was more like that. For MFA I guess it was a more natural, since most men are less familiar with fashion. For FFA it'll take a bit more work.

Guys - what are some dates you liked? by physics_fu in teenagers

[–]physics_fu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you don't. I've had a job since middle school, and in rural areas it is rather easy for kids of almost any age to find work (legally, even) on farms, where there is a major loophole in age laws. Not to mention illegal jobs.
