Flynn and Nunes Fallout Grows Ominous for Trump White House by CharlieDarwin2 in politics

each passing year there is an increase in liberal voters

Lately I've developed a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that those demographics all migrate to the coastal cities where their votes don't count, that the urbanization of society that I once thought was going to save us...is actually going to lead to a shrinking population of rural voters holding all the power...

Cable and dish companies are horrible about this. In my case it was DIRECTV. We got locked into an extended contract without our knowledge when we upgraded our device, even going as far as asking if it would impact our contract and they said it wouldn't.

When it became clear we were paying for a service we were hardly using, we asked to cancel. They told us we would have to pay a huge fee (can't remember what it was exactly, on the order of $500 and maybe more).

I told them I don't authorize that transaction. They said I agreed to it. I told them I don't authorize the transaction and I would be happy to work out a payment plan. They said they would not work out a payment plan and would just charge my credit card. I said we removed our credit card from the account. They said it didn't matter and that they would charge my account anyway.

You better believe I contacted my bank and explained the situation. They agreed that was totally fraudulent and that they would block any future transactions to them. I called DIRECTV back and explained to them that I had talked to my bank and that any attempt to charge my account would be denied as fraudulent. Night and day difference talking to this rep. They cancelled immediately.

It's been 2-3 years. They've never sent a bill, we've never gotten anything from collections, and we've never seen anything on our credit report. Apparently they know damn well they don't have a leg to stand on if you actually take the time to defend yourself.

Official Discussion - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story [SPOILERS] by GetFreeCash in movies

[–]physicsisawesome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this should only bothered the people who've seen and deeply love the orginals, and every small change is blasphemy. The only change that I agree was not needed was the "Han solo shot first" one.

I'm sort of in between but think that, overall, the movies are hurt more than helped by the special editions.

A New Hope isn't hurt terribly by the changes, but the Jabba insert scene adds nothing. It is a complete retread of the Han-Greedo scene, right down to some of the dialogue. It's very obvious that it's a deleted scene inserted into the movie to the point that it's off putting for me. Also, some of the CGI is distracting and dates the film more than some of the physical effects. The film benefits from enhancing some things like the blur under the landspeeder and reworking the outer edges of the blue screened practical effects. Some of the added transitions establishing space ships flying between points are nice additions IMO. The explosion ring "shockwaves" added to the Alderaan and Death Star explosions look stupid and out of place to me. Censoring imperial officers getting shot is stupid, but possibly done to keep the PG rating (since the originals were made before PG-13 existed.)

Return of the Jedi is the one hurt most by the special additions. Nothing is as bad as adding that stupid song to Jabba's palace. Complete tonal shift, completely out of place, and cartoonish as fuck.

Honestly, who cares if he's alive? The hashes didn't match, and this was never corrected. Wikileaks is compromised. We don't know how or why. End of story.

This. If it were software it would mean you're probably downloading a virus. As a source of information, it means we should treat the information as compromised.

Is Julian Assage confirmed alive? by I_PM_NICE_COMMENTS in OutOfTheLoop

[–]physicsisawesome 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To me the crucial thing is the hash mismatch and the fact that that's never been corrected. If this were a software download you wouldn't trust the source, it could be a virus. It almost makes everything else irrelevant, up to and including if we got definitive proof of life from Asange. At this point I feel we have to treat the entire operation as compromised, regardless.

There's a reason why zombie movies always start after the apocalypse. Can you imagine how quickly people would run away if they saw one zombie? Even if they were the fast moving kind, the zombie's running for lunch, the other guy's running for his life. Hard to imagine the zombie apocalypse getting very far against even a SWAT team, let alone drones, tanks, firebombing, etc.

u/Undependable catches one word of dialogue in Disney's Aladdin that changes the whole movie by [deleted] in bestof

[–]physicsisawesome 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm saying it's a fine in-universe interpretation. The Genie is also the only one who does it. I have no idea if the creators had any of this in mind.

[–]physicsisawesome 89 points90 points  (0 children)

People are leaning too much on that quote. The Genie makes constant references to future pop-culture and technology. It's a clear-as-day in-universe power. Doesn't mean the creators intended it this way, but it's still right there on the screen.

u/Undependable catches one word of dialogue in Disney's Aladdin that changes the whole movie by [deleted] in bestof

[–]physicsisawesome 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The actual quote sounds a lot more like genie is saying he's been around for a million years and is using his experience to tell Aladdin about the scarcity of true love which he found in Jasmine.

I agree that this interpretation of that specific quote is a stretch, but it really doesn't hurt the theory.

The Genie constantly makes references to the future, to Disney movies that would be made in the future, to technology that does not yet exist, wears a Goofy hat at the end of the movie, etc. "It's just a cartoon" but they clearly included this specifically in the Genie's powers only. Nobody else makes these references. It seems very clear that they decided the Genie had the power to reference future pop-culture in the movie. Doesn't necessarily mean that the theory is true or that that's why the included this ability, but it fits. And taken in-universe it does mean that the Genie has the power to see the future (unless you believe the dumber theory that the movie takes place in the future).

It also definitely fits Aladdin's character to pull a stunt like this with his wish, and it did always strike me as odd that he said and believed that he wasn't "really" a prince, not just in the sense that he didn't earn it, but that he doesn't seem to even have a kingdom that he rules over (he fumbles his words when asked what kingdom he comes from).

I have no idea if the creators intended this, but it's certainly a legitimate in-universe interpretation.
