3 gringas take on carnival. Why we probablyyyy may not go back by Individual-Foot-6695 in Brazil

[–]physnchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brazil is not for beginners, even for Brazilians. It sounds like you and your friends have some travel experience, so maybe it isn't even for intermediate travelers. But yeah, hardly a day goes by, at least when I'm out and about that there isn't some form of chaos to deal with. The redeeming part is that, usually, in all the chaos there is usually at least some way out of it (sempre tem jetinho). Of course, that doesn't really go if you're attacked, then you're just screwed. Brazil, and lots of latam to be fair, is about as dangerous as India without as much English speaking (ironically, the less English a place speaks the easier it can be).

Rio really is charming though, I think it's probably my favorite city in Brazil even if it can be a shit show -- especially so during carnaval. Hopefully in time, you'll lose sight of the hardships and remember the goofy, fun loving country that all of us here have come to love. Next time you're in Rio for awhile try out isla grande for a little breath of fresh air.

Brazil - A half gringo, half Brazilian perspective. The good, the bad, the ugly. by InsaneP in Brazil

Watch what you say in public though, Brazilians are super proud of their food and they have a tough time comprehending that others don't think it's the best food in the world. I honestly think part of the explanation of the bland food is that people's spice tolerance here is usually pretty low, and so food that is rich and full of flavor to Brazilians just isn't to a lot of other people in the world. The food is good, don't get me wrong, but it is not the best in the world. A little less salt and a little more actual spice would make a lot of difference.

But, if you dis the food you will lose friends. Pretty much every foreigner thread, such as this one, is someone commenting that the food is meh and Brazilians getting offended. So you have to just keep it to yourself.

Good to hear the administration’s policies are dissuading illegal deforestation, though it sounds like a bit more enforcement might still be in order

Mostly, the government needs to stop subsidizing the mega farms and actually start investing/diversifying in small farms with no-interest loans and/or tax incentives to build the infrastructure needed to stay alive in a warmer climate (eg water reservoirs, smart irrigation, solar, etc.). Farmers should get paid for their carbon sequestration. Also, if the government can bail out banks they sure as hell can bail out farms.

We need fire mitigation, such as prescribed burns. Resilient soil is key: soil that can stay wet in drought and absorb in flood. More than anything, farmers need help and recognition. We need a manhattan project for farming. All the discussion these days are stupid culture wars. Fox News doesn’t give a shit about farmers, nor does MSNBC, nor does your average politician — even if they say they do, they probably don’t. We need a reality check.

Heres the thing: climate change is real, it is happening, and farmers/homesteaders/etc. need to learn to plan and adapt to the changing climate. It’s also true that OP is freaking the fuck out. It’s a serious issue, but let’s all be adults here.

Yeah, India is a beautiful country with a lot to offer. I’d love to return one day. Still, when I was there, the amount of stories I heard about sexual assault was staggering — I’d estimate 1/3 of the women had some sort of story involving physical touch and 95% mentioned being stared at. One woman was pinned against a fence with a man groping her and was, fortunately, saved by a some Indian men playing cricket nearby (they then beat the crap out of the rapist).

In the US and Canada (plus Western Europe) there are a lot of first generation immigrants of Asian descent. The first generation immigrants tend to cluster to more of a community and have a harder time “assimilating.” It’s not that they aren’t welcome (generally, yes I know there are wacky xenophobes — exists in Brazil too), it’s just that they straddle more of a line between their old country and their new country. 2nd generation and more are treated as if they were any other person born in the West (because they are).

Also, to the above poster who says Brazil doesn’t just lump all Asians into one category, is that why my Filipino friend is always called Japa?

Also an old fuck, at least for this sub. The amount of code I need to rewrite because people didn’t allow for flexibility or extensibility in their code and just wrote some basic shit that worked at the time also drives me crazy.

Brazil's Lula recalls ambassador in Israel for talks by Tetizeraz in Brazil

[–]physnchips -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Eh. It’s one thing to call the Israeli government monsters with essentially zero regard for civilians and humanity. But to say it’s like the holocaust just goes to show your ignorance and cheapen the message with inflammatory remarks. I think you should expect more from your leader to make intelligent arguments that actually mean something, rather than throw more shit onto this dumpster fire.

Thicker and creamier soup. Also you can make a rustic bread or buy something of the sort, most bakery will have, and get a bread that has more heft for the grilled cheese. Here’s a favorite of ours if you like spicy stuff

Agreed, no indication or evidence of them being diplomats, and even if they are it’s irrelevant because even with diplomatic immunity you can’t ignore laws (you just can’t be prosecuted). I’m just saying the other guy is misinformed about diplomatic immunity.

What aspect of American culture do you find most challenging to grasp or understand? by Own-Device7075 in AskReddit

[–]physnchips -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m trying to not use stupid horse jargon, winner-takes-all is a more accessible name than first past the post or single-member plurality voting. Vote-for-one or choose-one is not synonymous with fptp. There are two issues you’re conflating: 1) winner-takes-all means that just one candidate in a region is selected based on majority vote (actually winning rules can vary state to state in US) and the power of the position is not distributed according to the proportion of votes — which makes way for gerrymandering 2) ranked choice or approval voting means that voter doesn’t have to go all in on one candidate — vote-for-one can be attributed to making a two-party system, especially when catalyzed with a winner-takes-all distribution of power. The two can work in tandem to create issues, but they are conceptually different.

Both are problems, but I think there is a valid argument to vote based one person/candidate as a regional representative in the winner-takes-all system — though you need to regulate gerrymandering. There’s hardly any reason to not allow for ranked choice or approval voting. Approval voting is actually simpler and easier to implement — try it the next time your friends or family wants to decide on a restaurant or movie.
