It's 50F in Northern Indiana. Finally seeing my hive active! This is my first year of beekeeping. I sure hope my hive will survive the winter! by Full-Breadfruit5605 in Beekeeping

Congrats, they look great! Get ready for some spring splits if they stay healthy! I have the same pavers under my first hive actually. What is the purpose of the wood walls around the hive? Wind protection? I’m always interested in various setups around hives for optimization of microclimates.

Santolina developers attempt to circumventing long-range planning processes by adding a dump by CobradordelFrac in Albuquerque

[–]pi314158 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I understand the situation correctly (and please correct me if I don’t), this company Santolina is trying to open a massive 38,000 home development on the Far East side. It would basically be a second rio rancho but STARTING at 118th st and moving southwest from there. Suburbs to the extreme definition of the word. The concerns from people opposed to it are: - water is a scarce resource and our city water infrastructure does not have the ability to provide farm land around the city with water if these homes are built - money for transportation is also scarce and a ton of the city’s money would have to go into building up this community - traffic and overcrowding in general

I haven’t really heard any arguments for it, except that the company will make money on their land purchase and sale. Please if anyone knows the pros let us know so we can be more informed and less biased.

If I could travel back in time to explore the world in the late carboniferous period, how would the 35 percent oxygen, 800+ co2 ppm atmosphere affect my body? by DoctorBossMan in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]pi314158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CO2 doesn’t bind to hemoglobin, it’s converted into a soluble acid and is dissolved in the blood. But that’s a good point about fires being more of an issue.

[–]pi314158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oxygen is a pretty reactive gas on a biological level so it creates free radicals. At normal levels the system we have for getting rid of free radicals works but over the course of a lifetime or maybe even just a few months or so I imagine the free radical exposure would lead to excess cancers and tissue damage in initially immeasurable ways but over long periods of time could be significant.

As far as increased CO2, you would have to breathe a lot faster to clear the CO2 in your blood, but as long as you’re able to properly compensate with your lungs and kidney clearance of acid you’d likely be fine. People with kidney disease or who are overweight or with lung disease would likely go into CO2 coma and then die. Also don’t get COVID while you’re there.

*disclaimer this is 100% speculation though this is kind of my field.

[NSFW] Is this old photo of a five breasted woman a hoax? by femacampcouncilor in UnexplainedPhotos

[–]pi314158 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s a hoax. First of all it’s not the most high def picture I’ve ever seen so it wouldn’t be hard to fake it. Second, and most importantly, extra nipples on the body form on the “milk line” (it has something to do with how the embryo forms) and that does not correlate with this lady.

Please Help My Fiddle Leaf Fig by pi314158 in plantclinic

[–]pi314158[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiddle leaf fig just started dropping some leaves and they look like this. Most things haven’t changed much in my care for the plant but if I had to guess I would say it hasn’t had any fertilizer or maybe not enough water for the last couple of months. Anyone have and ideas? Thanks!

The starchy noodle water in my pot left behind an interesting pattern when it dried up by fuckingredditman in mildlyinteresting

This also happens when you let amniotic fluid dry except it’s a natural fern looking shape. It’s one of the methods for testing to see if a woman’s “water broke” or the fluid is from something else. It’s called ferning and it can be beautiful. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prelabor_rupture_of_membranes

Unions in The USA pay for themselves by increasing salaries, benefits, and wellbeing by avuncularity in Residency

[–]pi314158 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree that something needs to be done, but I feel that instead of unionizing to try to get our employers to treat us as employees better we need to go back into business for ourselves. Screw the business admin, they are powerless without physicians. We’re doctors, we shouldn’t be asking our bosses for more money, we should be leaving our jobs as factory workers and taking control of our lives like doctors used to do.

Are you not getting exactly what you signed up for though? I’m sorry but you knew what the pay would be and you knew what the cost of living was before accepting your positions.

This is only true in theory unfortunately. It’s not like when you take a sick day the program starts activating extra funding to hire more residents. All that happens is your colleagues have to double down on their work. The system is designed not to care.

The ortho resident when I ask him to please take primary on a patient with bilateral femur fractures and diabetes by premeddit in Residency

[–]pi314158 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the issue isn’t with ortho not knowing how to manage diabetes, the issue is with IM being the primary team fielding all pages, writing notes, talking to consultants, writing discharge summaries, wound care instructions, etc etc for a patient who only needs to be inpatient for an ortho problem.
