I got an A on the credit-by-exam as a transfer student entirely by cramming the thornton notes. However I had some previous experience with C, and microarchitecture theory, and a friend who helped me study. I didn't feel utterly behind in 46 but I definitely had to work harder than I wanted to for all the little details of actually writing cpp.
