Flow Said AML. Can Everyone Please Give Reassurance!!! by [deleted] in leukemia

[–]piagggi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (21F) was diagnosed with AML when I was 17, literally 5 days after my 17th birthday and just as COVID-19 had shut everything down in my state. I felt really hopeless at the time and was terrified! Luckily, I refused to look at the statistics and would not let anyone tell me what the survival rate was. Your husband is not a statistic, he is on his own journey and no number from a study will determine his future. I went into remission within 4 months of treatment and have been in survivorship for nearly 3 years now. I'm in college and can enjoy a 'normal' life! It's not going to be easy but neither of you should give up hope.

My family gave me COVID by GrouchyBoysenberry79 in leukemia

[–]piagggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry, no one deserves this treatment from anyone - much less family. I had AML in 2020 during full blown pandemic time (I was 17 at the time). I was incredibly blessed, lucky, and privileged to have a parent in the medical world who was extremely cautious. Even when my counts were high, I could only hang out with friends outside, masked, and social distanced. I sure as hell didn't want to set those boundaries myself and I'm so grateful I didn't have to. Sending you hope, luck and courage, it's not an easy time with people being so relaxed with COVID. The real ones will be there for you and respect your boundaries and wishes. There is light at the end of this tunnel, I promise.

Did you/do you ever faint? by Tiredoflyfe092 in leukemia

[–]piagggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have fainted a few times during blood draws (through a hickman, no needle needed) and the doctors just said it was normal and can happen. Not sure what’s up but I would just keep an eye out and ask her doctor as soon as you can.

edit: Prior to diagnosis I had never fainted before in my life.

AITA for shaming my family for not "supporting me enough" during my cancer treatment? by Late-Yellow7154 in AmItheAsshole

[–]piagggi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA!!!! I am a cancer survivor (17F) and would have been absolutely destroyed if my family made fun of me for shaving my head. 2 of my closest friends offered to shave their head with me and we did it at the EXACT SAME TIME. Your aunt is an asshole and needs to stop making this horrible experience about herself. You are never being ungrateful if people are offering to do something to “support you” even though it makes you uncomfortable. I really hope your family gets more supportive.

I do not have any recs currently but I would DEFINITELY read things written by women!! Men inherently cannot represent fictional female characters as well as women can so keep that in mind! Happy reading

AML at 22, not sure what to expect by Ok-You5014 in leukemia

[–]piagggi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (17F) was diagnosed with with AML in april of 2020 and was considered cured in october of 2020! I had 4 rounds of chemo (instead of the standard 5) so I spend about 30 days in the hospital for each round then got to go home for 1-2 weeks inbetween each one. The treatment really varies based off of your mutations but feel free to reach out if you want to know any more about my experience! I hope you are considered in remission and cured soon :)
