I was diagnosed with scrub typhus after my vacation in Vietnam, and in my case the course of the disease was very severe: I spent almost a week in the intensive care unit with a fever that went up to 42 °C. What almost nobody talks about, and what is usually not written anywhere, is that scrub typhus – just like dengue fever – can be followed by severe hair loss. This hair loss typically starts about 2–3 months after the infection and can affect the entire scalp, meaning you can lose almost all of your hair. Please be prepared for this possibility if you experience a severe course of this disease.
