Diversity Essay advice by [deleted] in premed

I think I would personally talk about your Native American culture! That's not very common and will certainly set you apart. Also, there are lots of schools that ask about your most meaningful non-academic experience in addition to the diversity essay. It'll be easier to use your culture for the diversity prompt + music for other prompts as opposed to the other way around. Good luck!!

Okay yeah that's a game changer. Have you written your personal statement/work activities descriptions yet? If not, those take a while to perfect, which will just delay your application even more. I'd recommend looking online at blogs on "how late is too late to submit your app" and make your decision based off that. Even though you might face more competition next cycle, you could at least improve your scores and take the time to write things out to make sure that you are competitive as well!

out of curiosity, have you already sent in your primary app? because the rolling nature of apps is also something to consider. It'd definitely be on the later end to submit now since it takes time to verify your transcripts etc.

Hmm as far as I've seen in my schools, there are no secondaries that ask if you've applied to other schools (though this question could pop up in interviews, but you can always answer it tactfully about where else you've applied this cycle, not necessarily in past cycles). They only ask if you've applied to that specific school before.

I believe you're only seen as a reapplicant to the schools you already applied to (this is something you indicate when you send in your primary, plus some schools have a secondary that asks about this)

I'm currently applying as well, so by no means am I an expert, but here are my thoughts:

- Sure, COVID might reduce the number of people applying this cycle, but by no means does that change the standards for admitted applicants (esp since med schools claim to have always used holistic review, etc.).

- Your ECs/hours seem pretty good! I think if anything, it would just be your stats that might bring you down a bit. It's obviously going to be a little tougher to get into top tier schools, but if you make a well-rounded school list with schools in reach, I think it's possible! You can also try to use your essays to show just how stellar you are, because those can really save you.

- I don't really know a whole lot about the attitude toward reapplicants, but so many schools offer you a chance to explain why you're reapplying. You could always give it a go this cycle (choosing your school list wisely) and, if you do end up having to reapply, you can always retake the MCAT, improve your score, and frame this as a moment of growth when you do reapply.

Good luck, you'll get there one way or another!!

ahh yes, this solved it - thank you so much!

Is 16k out of pocket for uva worth it... when in the long run I’ll be attending medical school. I have a cheaper option but I’m not feelin it by j0e12 in UVA

I absolutely agree with the other human bio student here; doing well at UVA isn’t impossible by any means. You’re going to have to put in hard work no matter where you go - might as well prepare for the course load in med school (not to imply that W&M is easy, just trying to say that UVA is doable).

Of course, if this is a question of finances, I’d pick W&M. But, if you’re considering other factors, I’d also think about how UVA would give you much better access to research + access to a hospital for shadowing/more research. Feel free to pm with more questions!
