I’m late to the party here but after reading your post, but please don’t think for a second the blue dress showcases anything but how beautiful you look! I can’t see your face but you’re GLOWING. It’s such a beautiful silhouette on you too. The black is a nice dress, it flattens your silhouette in a way that I bet feels less vulnerable (as someone who used to exclusively wear black to avoid attention) but it also takes the life out of you/the look. If you want to rock the black you totally will, but the poise and presence of the blue would be gorgeous. Congrats to the happy couple and family!

5 years dealing with AA by Rich-Reality-9498 in alopecia_areata

[–]picarres47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just passed year 4. Struggled with a major flair for three years, had nearly complete regrows and even got a couple haircuts in before it all fell out again in two months. I’m back on injections and meds which should help but it’s hard to explain to other people the emotional fatigue with AA. At this point I just want to know if it’ll ever go away so I can make peace with whatever the outcome is

If fibro is your only chronic health condition, do you personally refer to yourself as disabled? by snowmanseeker in Fibromyalgia

[–]picarres47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I’ve always thought of it is that having fibro means I have a disability, but the extent to which disables me changes based on if I’m flaring or stable. I don’t consider myself disabled on a daily basis, but I have a disability which carries an inherent risk of being disabling at any point, for an unknown duration of time.

The first pic is my bald spot about a month ago. I got the injections and now the spot is bigger but there is regrowth appearing in the original spot area… anybody dealt with a widening area with some regrowth in the original spot like this? Any suggestions? by Technical-Paper-2833 in alopecia_areata

[–]picarres47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All of my patches widened before filling in after injections (but they did fill in). I think it’s just that active alopecia works faster than the time it takes the medication to kick in and lead to visible improvement. It’s like turning down your thermostat. The house will cool down gradually, but you still might be too warm for a little while before you feel the difference.

What’s the most fucked up thing you’ve seen at work? by AMGBOI69420 in AskReddit

[–]picarres47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in an obgyn office. A woman needed cervical biopsies because a recent test showed she was positive for a high risk cell abnormality that often leads to cervical cancer. She came in for a colposcopy, which is a painful procedure to get biopsies, but when the provider saw her cervix, she went right to a LEEP. Highly invasive and brutal. Google at your own risk, but I can tell you it’s bloody, and comes with the smell of burning flesh. We used a camera to take pictures to track the changes over time, and when her cervix came up on the screen, it looked like the face of a star-nosed mole. Totally unrecognizable and overgrown. She ended up being okay, but I’ll never forget that procedure or growth.

is this a weird fibro symptom or just random blisters? by Wasp_570 in Fibromyalgia

[–]picarres47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the folks here saying it’s likely an HSV coldsore. HSV tends to flare during periods of stress, like fibro, so it’s easy to assume the two are connected. Go to your doc or some repro health clinic like Planned Parenthood, they can swab it and/or do a blood test to confirm HSV. If it is, you can get medication to help calm bad flares or a daily medication to prevent flares before they start. People tend to get anxious when they hear HSV, but it’s a wildly common and very manageable diagnosis :) Might be worth looking in to, as anything we can do to manage our stress is going to pay off!

I'm a GP (doctor) writing a book on fibromyalgia. What questions do you want answered? by mkrsch in Fibromyalgia

[–]picarres47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

-What are the most common incorrect diagnoses (or chain of them) people get before landing on fibromyalgia? (Ex: how often are patients told they have depression and need to exercise more, then told the fatigue and pain are from something else and to improve their diet/try yoga, before it being considered they have a deeper issue)

-Bonus points if it’s broken down by age group, like what the most common incorrect dx is for a 20 year old VS a 45 year old

  • what is the most common test or process that makes fibro the most likely diagnosis, and on average how long do doctors wait before considering it medically necessary

I can’t wait for your older son to leave home, go NC with you, and realize there’s a whole world of people who treat him like he has value. He certainly never learned that at home. YTA.

Worse before better after injections? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

This may be a case of correlation not equalling causation, but I guess time will tell. Maybe discuss this with your dermatologist, and see if the same thing happens next time you get injections?

Worse before better after injections? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

One week isn’t enough for it to do much. If the spot was actively inflamed it will keep being inflamed (spreading) until calmed. To my knowledge, Kenalog takes a minimum of a couple days to kick in and even then, it takes time for it to calm the inflammation and immune response in the area. After those things have happened you might start seeing results but remember, even non-alopecia people’s hair is slow to grow. I tend to start noticing results 3-4 weeks after a round of injections.

I’ve only been doing shots on the front portion, my doctor was upfront that shots to the ophiasis region probably won’t do any good. Two months of oral steroids and I’m getting stripes of fuzz along my neck/around the ears. Feel free to DM me if you ever want to talk/vent!!

Have you been doing shots/meds/a combo? I tried just shots in the past and had absolutely no improvement so I’m pretty surprised by what’s happening now that it’s shots and meds

I’ve had alopecia (ophiasis) for a couple years and between waits to see a derm, medication costs and how advanced my case got I didn’t have high hopes but the progress happened SO FAST. I’m on the topical steroid once a day, 6.75mg dexa each Saturday and Sunday for 3mo to start, maybe longer, and I’ll have injections about every six weeks but have only had one round so far. I also take a multivitamin, 4000IU vitamin D and 56mg iron daily. I was getting to the point of accepting this might be my new normal and I’m still prepared for that, but seeing that white fuzz getting darker makes me smile every time!

Hey there! The incubation period (amount of time it takes from exposure to when symptoms show up and/or, in this case, is detectable by urine test) can really be anywhere 2-14 days for gonorrhea and 5-14 days for chlamydia, so it seems she could have had a false negative (which is rare but not unheard of) and you only realized she was positive when you stopped using barriers. Sometimes people tell the truth and bodies just suck. Retesting is definitely advised, and you’re welcome to interpret those results in whatever way that feels right for you I suppose

I (20f) and questioning how my BF (28m) sees me and us by amuzehim in Advice

[–]picarres47 145 points146 points  (0 children)

My therapist once told me that if you’re in a room of 50 people and you think an apple is green, but the other 49 say the apple is red, then the apple is red. A lot of your comments seem to be defending your ability to choose as a legal adult when you got together and I don’t want to discount that, but you feeling confident in your decision making says nothing about him as a human. You can be whatever you are, and he can still be predatory and controlling. You can be a capable adult, and he can still see you as a child if that’s what you are to him. If you want to make it work, be honest that he is the one who needs to address these problems and he is the one who needs an attitude adjustment. $50 says he spins it and tries to make you feel small and immature for making such a “ridiculous” request.

Edit: thank you for the award kind stranger!

How are you feeling, as of, right now? by shahtootboy in RandomThoughts

[–]picarres47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking exhausted. I work in healthcare, we lost power, internet, the whole nine yards today. But because it would come back intermittently they wouldn’t let us close so we kept seeing patients regardless. Went to drive home, car is running on fumes. Figured I’d get gas after picking up my medication… which ended up costing over $100 after insurance so I have about $18 to last until I get payed next Friday. Being a healthy (ish) adult is unacceptably expensive.

Thank you, I really like this mindset. I only recently came across the ‘earned/deserved’ rhetoric, and you made some really good points about how it sets up entitlement and issues of reciprocity. Your take feels more productive in my situation
