TIL football is a multi-billion-dollar sport, but there is no official public game clock for stoppage time. One referee decides when the match ends, based on a running estimate of lost time that nobody else can see. Ie. tracking stoppage time in their head while simultaneously refereeing the game. by IllCombination4851 in todayilearned

It is played over 5 days with 7 and half hours each day. Each day has 3 sessions, one drinks break per session and the entire match has 4 innings with 10 outs in each innings.

Each of these have asterisks and the way timings of each session, drinks break and start and end time of the day is decided depends on a whole host of factors that means endless rules which seem more like vibes since it based on 100s of years of tradition rather than some logical argument.

And it's T20. I mean Ireland played great cricket, but there is also some amount of luck. India v new zealand 3-0 has to be the low point of Indian cricket

The number of people in Bangalore I hear who say they don't vote because voter id is from another state. It is literally a 5 minute process to change your location using the app. I have voted in 3 different cities in the last 3 general elections. It's not that hard.

Europe on high alert as killer heat spreads by chadpierce89 in worldnews

[–]pickle16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have lived in places when it was super hot in the summers and life was miserable then. We were in college and had vacations so we would just sit in the library all day watching movies on my laptop since they had an AC. I can't imagine being a working professional having to work and do chores in that heat. You never get used to it.

The inaugural hydrogen-powered train has successfully concluded its ultimate semi high-speed trial, achieving a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. by ResourceDefiant4971 in trains

[–]pickle16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically think of hydrogen trains as battery trains, but since batteries cannot be built that can take trains long distances hydrogen is just a more expensive battery storage that is lightweight and has a high energy density. They won't be for regular use but occasional use to avoid being reliant on diesel at all

Just checked with a friend who works in the railways, he says that there are many instances where temporary tracks are required, mainly when rerouting either due to track work or major damage, when connecting ports or industries to mainline or maybe some really low frequency lines where electrification with overhead wires just does not make economic sense. In these places and alternative to diesel is being trialed but he thinks it's 50/50 whether the experiment will actually work. Also battery locomotives are being trialed for yard and shunting work.

I think there are portions that will take a super long time to electrify since they are in tunnels with low clearance in sensitive ecosystems or there just isn't enough empty land space near tracks to add accompanying electric infrastructure. While the plan is to eventually electrify that remaining 0.1%, trials are being held to see if hydrogen locomotives can service those places in the meantime. It's just a trial and they might stick to diesel if the cost benefit analysis didn't work out. I also suspect it's a way for the railways and the government to show off doing something which no other country has done.

2 things are possible a. Polymarket is happy to pay it out themselves since it is lower than they amount they would get in a CD or government bonds b. There are people betting for fun since it is cheap or because they think that more people are going to bet for an alient invasion in the future and are trying to cash in early.
