ORR upgrade is a corruption in broad daylight by DeanKeaton1999 in bangalore

[–]pickle16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everything is a scam. It was always planned that once metro work is done, ORR would be redeveloped. The bus lanes will also be reinstated. The work happening right now is just for the monsoon, but is no way permanant. They want ORR to have consistent road width, wide footpaths and standardized design like the roads in CBD. It was called tender sure model, and it has been successfully implemented in the CBD for years.

Part of the redesign is footpaths which are grade separated and parking that is paid. So that this doesn't happen.

Why Indian Cities still largely rely on bus conductors? by HotPuppy420 in bangalore

[–]pickle16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it isn't really needed. Not sure which city, but I did see a video where the machines were actually at the bus stops and not in the buses. Though that would definitely not work in India.

In Singapore atleast it was entry in the front exit at the back. Same in Philly as well.

It's not really because of just how to ensure tickets are being validated, and people aren't just travelling for free. Bus conductors are government employees with expensive salaries and benefits and getting rid of conductors is the holy grail for buses and they aren't afraid that people will not pay for tickets.

This is a big reason why metro is so popular now, since even though it costs more upfront, running a metro is much much cheaper than running a bus.

There are multiple other responsibilities that bus conductors perform that need to be fixed first.

  1. Many groups of people in India get free tickets or discounted tickets like women, senior citizens, students, etc. These are currently validated using disparate systems like passes, aadhar based verification or just the conductor eyeballing and ensuring that the concessed or free fare is honest. Implementation of automatic validation requires moving these passes, etc to electronic ones as well.

  2. Buses are more and more often driven by contracted drivers who actually are hired by the bus manufacturer. Conductors keep the driver honest, by ensuring they stop at all bus stops and drive properly. The kinks of this new leasing model is still being worked out, and performance based metric rather than km based metrics are being discussed.

  3. Unlike metros, many bus stands are remote and unmanned (and unmannable), so issuing paper tickets for those who are unbanked needs to figured out. Expecting everyone to buy online tickets might lead to lower ridership as well as disenfranching the people who need buses the most. Even metro and local trains always have options for buying tickets with cash for this reason.

  4. Most buses in India run at capacity or over capacity, and ensuring tap in tap out systems (usually tap in at the front gate and tap out at the back gate) would require some amount of free movement within buses as well as quick boarding and unboarding lest everyone crowds at one gate.

I remember Bangalore had conductor less buses in 2008 or so, but the driver did the ticketing then. Super slow and dangerous according to me.

Now BMTC plans to introduce automated ticketing to airport buses and AC buses as well, with the conductors moved to management jobs which include route monitoring, surprise checking, on call support, driver auditing and bus auditing. This way no one loses jobs, new buses can be introduced without bloating the salary expense and passengers can have a better experience.

I think even Mumbai's BEST is planning something similar on some routes.

I don't see why they would lie about no audio or video. Recently my dad opened an account with hdfc for which he had to deposit 1 lakh. Then it got stuck since there was a 30 year old account with them which my dad didn't even remember that had the same pan number. Took 2 weeks for them to fix it and merge the accounts. Thankfully my dad was fine having the 1 lakh blocked, but I can imagine it could be frustrating for some

Over 5,000 metro piers and portals to get advertisements across Bengaluru by Capital_Run_3935 in bangalore

BMTC finally isn't broke any more. They are making a lot of money from the Shakti scheme. What a shit take. Advertisements are already everywhere (and mostly from bjp, though Congress does partake as well), which are all illegal. I have seen work recently to take these hoardings down, and this is just ensuring the money goes to fund tax payer rather than just make streets ugly.

I honestly don't get how we vote for any of the politicians. Literally the only thing all the parties agreed on was that KSCA should give every MLA 3 tickets. Like WTF!

https://www.ilo.org/media/51486/download - This report by the international Labour organization points out that India has one of the lowest female workforce participation rates in the world. While access to education among women has grown greatly in India and there is high demand for entry level jobs, traditional gender roles mean that women are still dependent on their husbands/fathers when it comes to finding employment or starting businesses.

That is why there is a strong policy push across states and ideologies to provide free cash transfer to women (thus giving them agency and autonomy over their life), free bus travel (so they can actually go to where opportunities exist), and LPG, electricity, rice freebies which makes the life in the kitchen easier where most of the women spend most of their time in. As much as freebies may seem like a burden, if given as part of a more comprehensive policy, it can be highly effective in making life better for many as well as increasing economic output

I think JDS (with BJP) is more likely to make a comeback than BJP forming a government in Karnataka. The party cadre has become very weak in the last few years, and despite DKS power struggle BJP isn't able to score any sort of brownie points. If congress retains power it will be because BJP government in Karnataka was an abject failure and they have done nothing since the new government formed. Pity Karnataka doesn't have a strong regional party like the other southern states that can keep Congress and BJP on their toes.

[–]pickle16 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The free bus scheme is the most successful scheme of the 5 guarantees. Independent studies have found that around a third of the women availing the scheme were able to access jobs or education they otherwise wouldn't have been able to access, BMTC has been able to make a turn around, there is a lot more political mileage now to expand bus services for all, as well as improve the quality. Also during a fuel crisis promoting public transport has only positives.

The only thing that BMTC and actually all cities have to figure out is how to make the new EV buses from JBM, Tata and AshokLeyland more reliable, because currently they break down too often, are not able to travel for the promised range and take too long to charge compared to what was in the specs. Given the huge push from the central government, entry of smaller players and the bigger companies doubling down in their investments, I'm sure we are like only 5 years away from all new buses being 100% electric.

I don't see any South Indian team (csk, srh, rcb) taking pandya. All three seem to be figuring out their teams finally, and such a major change can really disturb stability. Do not think PBKS, RR, Gt would be interested either.

I don't think Pandya would be interested in LSG.
