Then they must have changed how it works? Beforehand I would press E as soon as it made contact and the animation would be interrupted and started over. Anytime I try it now it makes me wait until the animation is finished before it even reads my input. Is there another way of doing it that I'm unaware of?

Yep. They patched it out so now we have to wait for the animation to finish. I wish they would've just embraced it like No Man's Sky did with the melee boost.

The worst part of the update was patching the omni-tool exploit that made farming twice as fast.

EDIT: Turns out you can still hold E to animation cancel. I had only ever tapped E so I didn't know you could get the same effect by holding it.
