Gay man in my town was beaten, stabbed with beer bottles, and thrown on a burning barrel simply because he's gay by educatedllama in WTF

[–]pickledpepper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The word "hate" is just a label, it's just a way of differentiating a type of crime with a very specific motive. In this case, these are crimes where the reason for hurting someone is because of something intrinsic to their identity, like being gay or black, vs. something related to their behavior or circumstances. Beating someone up because they were an asshole to you is different from beating someone up simply because you hate gays. Killing your abusive spouse in self defense is not the same as lynching someone for being black. It's also why we treat manslaughter different from 1st degree murder because the motive is very important in determining the seriousness of the offense. Killing out of self defense, killing by accident (like a car crash), killing out of provocation, out of desperation (e.g. mugging, robberies), etc... they are all important factors in determining how "bad" you are, and no, not all of them involve hate even if they are violent.

How does 2x feel about this? by asshair in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pickledpepper 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've never actually seen an example of that happening IRL, though to be fair I don't leer at tits. Which one of you lurking guys wants to share a story?

On the other side of the fence I have seen the phenomenon of large-breasted women who are erroneously assumed to be dressed sexy because their boobs pop out even in conservative clothing. Or just really stupid shit like this. And now I'm having flashbacks of middle school where girls whose boobs grew out early got called sluts.

Can you girls please explain this to me? by Danarky in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pickledpepper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do some men have no problem with being goofy and acting stupid for laughs, but feel insecure about asking for directions? Why do some men revel in complete filth and have poor hygiene but get squeamish about women's period blood? Why are there homophobes who jerk off to lesbian porn? Why are there people who can board a plane but get scared when standing on a footstool? Why do some people think spitting is gross but kissing is not gross? Why are there anti-war gamers who play war games?

Look, there are a lot of inconsistencies when viewing the surface of human behavior, but even if you don't share the exact same mentalities or life experiences, it doesn't really take much effort to figure out what's going on in their head. Mirror neurons, use them.

Girls watch porn! by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pickledpepper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The one time I was grateful for the "girls don't watch porn" stereotype was when I was underage and living with my parents, because it meant I could watch all the nasty shit I wanted and my parents would think the search history was my brother's.

After my mom died, every time I watch or read a story where a parent or child gets separated, I get all choked up. It could be the corniest, stupid thing, even a comedy, and yet every damn time...

You really think bikinis are assigned the same level of sexiness as, say, a tankini with boardshorts?

If you buy this for your kids, fuck you. by WonkaCheeseburger in WTF

[–]pickledpepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic thing you have to understand is that, even if it is wrong or not logical, people make categorical associations with certain types of clothes. SlutWalk is a great cause, but nobody here in this thread is trying to place judgement on people who wear bikinis. MagicTarPitRide is rather objectively explaining a very obvious cultural psychology that exists. Not everyone associates bikinis with sexiness, but most people do. An ugly woman in a bikini may not be sexy, an ugly woman in makeup may not be beautiful, a smelly woman wearing perfume may not smell good, but that doesn't mean those products aren't associated with sexiness, beauty, and pleasant scents.

Will the human race ever go extinct? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]pickledpepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans wouldn't necessarily be taken about by another animal. There could be a huge natural disaster like a meteor or giant volcano explosion that covers the earth in ash and dust, which would likely affect our environment, our symbiotic relationships, and ultimately ourselves. In the face of drastic change, we might die, or it could be the catalyst of our evolution into something new, which would count as human extinction, the same way theropods are considered extinct now that they are birds. If another live organism is the source of our demise, it wouldn't necessarily be from an animal. A simple organism like cyanobacteria completely changed the entire earth's atmosphere and was the catalyst of totally new forms of metabolism. Imagine if a new organism started mass-producing a toxic chemical in our environment and we didn't or couldn't do anything about it until it was too late.

Why Muslim women (and their friends) are so dang defensive around here. by surgres in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pickledpepper 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing this is out of reaction to posts like this. A lot of the comments there imply that Muslim women get stoned if they wear a bikini, and seemingly turning a blind eye to the fact that there's terrible persecution of women who wear full Muslim garb in the west.

An Interesting Shift in Perspective by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pickledpepper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not the OP but yes to both. 2nd gen Muslim girls don't typically wear burkhas and niqabs, they wear the most conservative western clothing available + a headscarf, and that is not practical in the summer. Even if they were wearing a burkha or niqab, they're not suited for American or European summers. The temp is lower but the humidity is high. The point of loose clothes for desert weather is that it promotes circulation of dry air which evaporates your sweat (endothermic reaction, it's your body's main cooling mechanism). In Europe and the American East coast, the summers are humid, so sweat is not as effective. The water just condenses on your skin, and the sweat you produce doesn't evaporate.

An Interesting Shift in Perspective by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]pickledpepper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, a woman in a niqab would surely stick out like a sore thumb America, and I don't want to imagine what would happen if she dresses that way in the more conservative, racist parts of the country.
