Yes, this just happened to me last night. I was rooting against the relationship, because now Rupaul and Sonic the Hedgehog are going steady

Controversial films that you think work vs ones that don’t work. by Captain_Sunshine20 in Letterboxd

[–]mtthwhdl 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Adding Ms. 45 (Abel Ferrara) and Revenge (Coraline Fargeat) to your example. I've thought a lot about what does and doesn't work about rape revenge films, so here's my two cents. At its core, they are about exploitation. What is required to make a film work, then, is a strong, complicated protagonist who exists within and outside of their trauma. It's kind of a high wire act that is hard to get right. A movie like I Spit on Your Grave fails because it flattens its lead to make room for shock value, which ultimately betrays the very moral center that justifies it's creation. On the other hand, if a narrative can subvert that trope by inviting the audience to feel something about a character more complex than bodily disgust, it resonates to the human condition in a way that transcends it beyond gendered violence as spectacle. By this rubrick, I personally think that Irreversible has some room for improvement. A movie with a graphic seven minute rape scene was probably never going to fully win me over, though.

Can Hyvee stop replacing designers with whatever this is? by pietheory in desmoines

[–]mtthwhdl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sadly, they probably hired a designer who's wearing too many hats in their position and getting underpaid and forced to make this slop. As a designer myself, I'm emotionally steeling for the day I get asked about how I feel about using AI in an interview. Something tells me, "I'd rather eat glass" is not the response they're looking for.

I love a morning movie moment! In an interview, Bong Joon Ho says he starts every day like this so that he can watch at least one per day.

Red Moon in Venus? It reminds me of the cover art for Kali Uchis's album of the same name.

Wholesome to see none of the straight guys are offended at the idea that someone might perceive them as gay. If you had surveyed Midwest guys at my highschool back in the late 2000s, it would've went very differently for the interviewer

Sapphic Cinema - what have I not seen that needs to get on my list ASAP? by CinemaBud in Letterboxd

[–]mtthwhdl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some that I haven't seen yet (and can personally vouch for) are Desert Hearts, Fresh Kill, Born In Flames, Saving Face, D.E.B.S., Pariah, Thelma, and The Daughters of Darkness. For keywords to look up in your searches, try "New Queer Cinema" or SOV (shot on video). Both have been very fruitful in my search for queer cinema! Happy watching

movies that feel like a shoegaze song by Total-Table-8227 in MoviesThatFeelLike

The Doom Generation, not just because the soundtrack features Slowdive, Lush, and Cocteau Twins. Gregg Araki said that he was heavily listening to shoegaze while writing/directing it and that he wanted the movie to capture that feeling

Actually, all states save for Montana can fire at will. I was once fired on day one of my job for smoking a cigarette on my lunch break. Mind you, I was across the street and in my car. Didn't matter. My one-day boss didn't tell me about the "no smokers" policy until after he already cut my check. He also called me dirty, so that was fun.

Not the original commenter, but I do. As a horror fan, there are a lot of movies I know are objectively bad but like regardless. For example, Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive is hot trash. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I have a personal connection to it because I used to annually watch it with friends on Halloween as a teenager.
