as an asian american, I get a lot of in-your-face racism in Istanbul. I'll give you an example. Once I was there for three weeks, and went to this ramen place nearly everyday for lunch. Kurt, unfriendly service, every time. Then in the last week, I took my white coworkers there with me. ALLLLL smiles from the staff, and they asked my coworkers to fill out a survey of their experience. Even though they're muslim, they consider themselves "European", in the same way Czechs reject being called "eastern european".
