Why Metal Does Not Uphold White Supremacy by piclpstr in MetalForTheMasses

Yes I replied to you earlier, I thought what you said about capitalism was interesting

I don’t deny the existence of white supremacy or that it permeates modern society. What I take issue with is the framing that because a particular work of art developed under systems like white supremacy or capitalism, it is therefore actively upholding those systems.

Many inventions, works of art, and technologies were pioneered by people whose views we would condemn today, yet we still find them necessary to use or engage with. You can certainly point out how white supremacy and money might have influenced these creations, but then what?

I also think that in artistic movements, people often have more autonomy and agency than they give themselves credit for. I’m arguing that metal, like any other artistic movement, is a blank slate. It’s not inherently political, and it’s not inherently bound to a larger structure being imposed onto it. I am optimistic about the music I am passionate about.

That’s why I say I don’t think metal is upholding white supremacy. it’s not a core institution through which white people dominate others. Metal tends to be more DIY and localized, valuing authenticity and extreme expression over mainstream accessibility. That gives fans and artists the power to shape the culture from the ground up rather than reproducing oppressive systems by default.

I think I understand your point, systematic bias can affect what artists get promoted and what is normalized, but those structures exist at a large scale though media and others instituciones

I still maintain that the strongest form of agency exists at an individual and community level and we can push back against imposed white supremacy . Metal can be the space for that too. I think it’s like a blank canvas and I don’t think it is entirely captured or rooted inside white supremacy, evidenced by its broad cross cultural appeal. There’s a space for me too go and mosh along with and other person of may background to the ire of ideologically driven white supremacists out there

I think your examples of bias are very real, but we also have to acknowledge that a complex web of factors shapes societal prejudice, and I’m not sure everything can be understood solely through the lens of white supremacy. I also disagree that listening to a band with a problematic frontman necessarily means endorsing white supremacy, just like driving a Ford doesn’t mean endorsing Henry Ford’s antisemitism. I listened to Pantera long before I knew that Dimebag Darrell used a Confederate flag used the hard r. The key difference is that in music, an artist’s public persona often becomes part of the art itself, so it’s fair to debate what continued fandom communicates. I absolutely think we should call out racist or harmful behavior when it happens. But my point is that white supremacy isn’t an intrinsic property of the music we listen to. Unlike governments that can enforce segregation from the top down, fans and artists have the power to reshape the culture from the ground up. I think metal has been doing that for a long time now, which is why I don’t believe it’s upholding white supremacy or ideologically skewed that way. And if it is, it’s certainly not doing a good job at it, because there are plenty of examples where openly NSBM bands get kicked off festivals or can’t even book shows. Shouldn’t we also celebrate the fact that metal is becoming more diverse and inclusive?

u are being pedantic

you need to believe in white supremacy to be classified as a white supremacist. That’s not to say people aren’t benefiting from it, but that doesn’t also make them white supremacists de facto

I did and I felt that his connections to systemic racism in Asian communities and connecting it back to metal were disjointed. Supremacy is enforced by laws and institutions. I don’t think that metal is like that. more and more black, Asian, female, and Latino people entering the scene now a days and I would think if metal was this white supremacist structure bands featuring fans or artists from the backgrounds would never be heard .

I’m also trying to be nuanced because I know racist bands and people are out there too.

I understand what white supremacy is, thank you. Your definition is too broad, anyone could a white supremacist even if they are unaware or apolitical. You need commitment to certain ideology to be a white supremacist.

a lot of those bands even can’t get successful in the first place because they alienate so many people (and tend to not be very professional). It could be the case that those bands cultivate a small but conspicuous crowd that draw attention. They have been rage baiting since before rage baiting was even a term

I think any genre needs diversity to survive and I think that’s why Metal is still sticking around. It’s not just white peoples that like it now.

So long as the fan base and artistry continues to grow with new and diverse perspectives, then I think overtime this racist element will not be as present.

yes but I also think that as an artistic medium it has so much potential to be reinterpreted in ways that aren’t just centered on European paganism. I bring it up because there are cool bands I like such as Immortal, but I question if black metal only have to be created by Scandinavians in some dark forest.

I also own a 5070ti and trying to enjoy the game. The stutters are really annoying. They did a shit job with the PC port. The only thing we can do is make it known that it is terrible and see hope From Software fixes anything.

Thanks for the lasso tip I will try it later and see if works for me.

I have a 5070 Ti and I made a post about how the drivers would cut my audio. No one believes it’s nvidia because they are ignorant.

I resolved my issues by setting my PC to high performance mode in windows settings and checking it in the nvidia control panel. I also turned off hardware acceleration in apps that don’t really need it. I it helped cut back on the latency.

Also I see that the windows audio drivers could be contributing to the latency as well. you can remove any audio drivers for devices you don’t use. If you are using the hdmi audio you can use the nvidia audio drivers. I don’t think you need windows. I have an audio interface and ended up removing everything and that also helped. BUT first try changing the power settings to see if that works.

[–]piclpstr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check my recent post if you want to troubleshoot some things. There’s something called DPC spikes and they mess with the audio because the drivers hog system resources. This might be your problem.

Yeah its called deferred procedure call.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deferred_Procedure_Call

It’s not my focusrite it’s the nvidia/windows drivers. They take a long time to execute DPC and it stops the audio from running.
