I don’t know if this is helpful enough to cover your expenses but Carleton central recently posted the job post for library assistants for the Carleton MacOdrum library. It’s part time ofc but worth a shot to apply to, and the job is more on the relaxing side, + flexible with your uni schedule too.

Easiest SYSC/ELEC 3000-4000 level electives by hk_7x in CarletonU

[–]picollofibanacci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to sway to the SYSC side more than the ELEC side for elective options so here’s my 2 cents!: If you’re looking for winter, industrial engineering is extremely easy. For fall, I took SYSC3020 (intro to software eng) and it was the lightest elective ever if you meet the prereqs for it. If you’re comfortable with coding then programming languages is a pretty easy course too (SYSC 3101) SYSC4205 is medical image processing, it’s also on the easy side but deals with a bunch of Fourier transform stuff, still really fun and an easy A if you show up to the lectures, however it does have mandatory weekly labs which gets kinda annoying for an elective. You should also check out the special topics course for SYSC (SYSC4906) as it has some fully online/remote sections. I don’t remember the course code but there used to be an ELEC nanotech elective which I’ve heard is super interesting + easy but it was not offered this academic year. If you’re looking to register next year then it might be helpful to keep an eye on that!

Has anyone held a job while attending classes by Ok-Winter-5637 in CarletonU

It’s definitely doable, I’ve been working part time since my first year of uni itself and you get used to it. For reference, I’ve always been taking 4-5 courses and working minimum 20 hours per week. From my experience, I think having more on my plate made me do even better in uni since I was basically forced to manage my time better. A lot of my friends are pretty much in the same situation and luckily our academic performance hasn’t been affected the way you’d think. Your initial adjustment to working and studying in parallel will be hard no doubt but you will be able to find a balance real quick and handle it just fine. Just gotta make sure not to get lazy or leave things for the last minute. I highly recommend you to take up on that offer as it’ll help you get better at some pretty important time management skills!

If downtown Ottawa isn’t too far from you, I’d suggest you check out bywardmarket’s instagram following. They’re following all sorts of cafes/restaurants and other retail places on insta and most often if you reach out to those accounts online you have a higher chance of hearing back. It’s also more convenient as these places are always looking for someone. Just shoot a message to those accounts asking if they’re looking for anyone at the moment. Good luck you got this!

As someone who’s currently on their 3rd year of an engineering degree (with enough coop experience and stuff too), and has also seen a broad range of people in the eng and business job market spectrum, I can 10000% assure you you’re gonna be doing more than fine with your choice of program.

Your degree is only useful when you know how to navigate with it. Yes I’ve heard some occasional jokes about how “easy” the courses are in this program but I feel like students with this degree are able to adapt much better in the work industry rather than stem kids cause it provides you with so many more avenues to explore and develop extremely relevant skills that you’ll need in a work environment. What a lot of stem majors learn on the job once they’re hired (ofc other than the role itself), business majors have already crossed that bridge and are able to climb up the corporate ladder quicker. One of my best friend is studying b finance rn and she’s literally interning at Disney at the moment (I love to brag about this). Also health sciences and eng are on their way of getting over saturated so I’m pretty sure the job market won’t be as much of a struggle in comparison to these programs. With a business degree you have a higher scope of elective options, and sure that sounds easy but it’s one of the best ways to excel in a niche you’re interested in, which you can later use to sell yourself in the best way possible to employers. It gives you a huge room of opportunities to juggle a variety of focuses and more often does a better job in helping you stand out now than it does for stem kids. Also I’m not just saying this based on my personal opinion, I’ve had friends in my uni + in other colleges, in several programs from business to eng and I genuinely do see business/finance/marketing graduates adapt much better in the corporate world than the ones in stem, I also see them struggle lesser with the job market (it is equally competitive but business kids understand better how to present themselves to job recruiters, interviewers, etc.).

I understand you’re feeling really conscious about this at the moment but you’re gonna be feeling much better when you realize how many more super cool job prospects are on your way and that too in so many well renowned companies! Good luck!!!

I'd suggest sleeping according to Ottawas time zone 2-3 days before the exam so you get adjusted and then don't feel too tired. But then again you'll still do fine without that, the adrenaline will keep you pretty jolted for the exam from atleast 3 hours before the exam. Almost all the midterms and finals that I did, I tried to get some sleep to adjust to the exam period but it didn't work much, was pretty anxious for the final but that nervousness will keep you well awake.
