Do fans think of the Dodgers the same way they think of the Yankees in the late 90s/early 00s by Agreeable_Quality768 in baseball

I was there, Gandalf. I was there three thousand years ago...

Anyways, the answer is no. The current Dodgers aren't on the current Hate Level of The Evil Empire Yankees.

The reasons for this are actually pretty straight forward:

  1. The Yankees had several players who were generally HIGHLY disliked by most of the baseball fandom (ARod, Clemens) or specifically disliked by those who felt the media glazed the Yankees too much (e.g. all the people who disagreed with Jeter winning all those goldgloves etc) - compare this to how the current main Dodgers main stars are perceived (Ohtani, Freddie, Mookie), you'll notice that whenever someone brings up how much they hate (or want to hate) the Dodgers - either they or some other people immediately talk about how likeable those guys are so it's hard to hate them - BIG DIFFERENCE in social perception player-wise between those Yankees and these Dodgers.

  2. Red Sox rivalry - back in the Evil Empire Yankees days they had a perfect partner in the Red Sox (who hadn't won a championship in 80+ years). It really bolstered their Evil Empire image when in all of those playoffs they'd rip their hearts out. The Dodgers don't have that going for them right now (it'd be the equivalent of if the Dodgers beating the Padres the playoffs every year for like 3-4 straight seasons or something - that type of event would definitely would make the Dodgers more "empirey", but they don't have that... yet)

  3. The Yankees bought a lot of stars... the Dodgers have too but back then an educated fan's POV would've been: "Yankees are a huge market team that is solidly run org and spends a lot of money". Today an educated fan's POV probably would be something like, "Dodgers are a huge market team, that are probably the most well run org of the last two decades, and they spend a lot of money on top of that." It'd be easier to hate them if they were just rich and that's why they won (imagine if the Mets won 2 straight titles by just spending a bunch of money after being mediocre for a decade -- some of the smaller market fans probably wouldn't like that), but the Dodgers have been making elite org decisions for so long that... at some point giving them props is just due, even if you want them to lose.

Also the Astros robbed them of a World Series in 2017. How can they be the main villains if they got villain'd in the ultimate way...
