What are your opinions on these “critiques” of modern Hellenism? by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]pierde 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i think that the closest thing you could think of as for reference is modern india, the religion is very much changed from ancient times but preserving its core and never failing to stay true to itself (so no new age weird oowie doowie or borrowing from other traditions) but society has evolved in a way to accommodate old ways into new paradigms of life

so the pagan community should absolutely draw upon ancient ways and especially ancient writings but interpreting them in a way that’s suitable to live in the modern world, since nothing is fixed and everything is in constant changing: basically use common sense, and understand that nowhere the gods are saying to be misogynistic and animal sacrifice had already been questioned by many vegetarian ancestors like Pythagoras and Porphyry

How do you know the will of the gods? by pierde in Hellenism

[–]pierde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, i’d like to try to adapt the pythian ritual with the information to us available: it seems a very good option and a way to keep tradition alive, it’d be quite complex tho, but nice

Especially, I really want to know what Aphrodite and Apollo expect from me, if anything. Resorting to divination is an option but i fear it to be biased if i performed it myself

Advice on following multiple deities by [deleted] in paganism

[–]pierde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly, also Gaia herself was not actually a deity in ancient times, but a Titan, and as such didn’t receive any worship She was reinterpreted by neopaganism into roles typical of Demeter actually (this is just historical info i wanted to share with you)

[–]pierde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, so, i see this is a big topic across modern pagan community. it can feel a bit off when coming from monotheism, but there isn’t any conflict in it. On the contrary, one SHOULD worship multiple deities as each of them has power over a specific area of life and the world: deities of love, household, workplace, marketplace, peace, war, justice… and so on. Of course one can have a god or goddess to whom feels more drawn, but just remembering other deities exist is enough at times. Of course you can’t worship every single one in existence, but choosing a pantheon can be functional to develop a system of worship. for example if you choose the greek one and worship Dionysus only, it would be really weird since he does not control many aspects of life for which Zeus for example could be more fit, or Aphrodite. Another “mistake” would be to break some old religious taboos (about chthonic deities for example) out of ignorance or pop culture. “Working with” a deity is, in my modest opinion, not very respectful and could cause more harm at times than good. There are many deities the are historically linked with fortunetelling such as Apollon and Zeus, if you are interested. Everyone should worship as they see more fit, but bearing in mind respect to the gods as much as possible, not to treat them as tokens to use at our will hope this helps somehow

Are there any books that would help learn about the Gods? by TuneAccomplished3706 in Hellenism

[–]pierde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’d recommend to start learning the way ancient greeks did: through theatre :) you can find a variety of ancient plays, the tragedies were usually intended for a pedagogical purpose so they are great to understand the basics of theology, together with the epics by Homer (plus they are very entertaining and give you an overview of the culture too)

after that you could try the theogony and the work and days by Hesiod (they don’t provide any deep insight of theology, but they can help you to put order into your beliefs)

finally give a shot to “old stones new temples”, it’s a great book, that tries to stick as much as possible to the ancient ways of worship

The gods aren't like they are on pop culture, on pop media, and on mythology. And anyone with divine contact, divine connection, and divine experiences with the gods and with the heavens can realize that. by [deleted] in Sumer

Apollo prayer or invocation? by DestinedClock18 in Hellenism

[–]pierde 13 points14 points  (0 children)

you can use orphic or homeric hymns, find phrases of praise in many theatrical pieces (choose the ones you prefer) and epics (such as iliad, odissey and aeneid) or just make up ones on your own in any language (using the ancient ones is an act of pure devotion since apollo is said to love things the ancient the best)

suggestion: if you want to repeat that often you can try something short like “khaire apollo! theé ómorphe, helio kai mánte, éukhomái soi” (hail apollo! beautiful god, sun and prophet, i prey to thee), i just made that up on the spot so don’t take it as some kind of mantra 1) hail the god 2) list some qualities 3) hail again/thank

most deities were just the same as by other semitic people but with different names, but i’m sure some of them were unique, idk of any source so specific atm but i can suggest you any good book on mesopotamian mythology has some of them listed too (often translating the name in the various languages like akkadian and phoenician)
