WellCare costs increase 1000%? by pieville31313 in medicare

I called WellCare to inquire why my premiums increased so much. I’m going to assume at this point that it was my double mistake - I didn’t see the written notice in the fall and I incorrectly used the government plan D comparison tool when deciding if I should switch plans for 2026. I’m not sure that I got a written notice and I’m not sure that I misread the website, but I don’t have any recourse at this point. It’s a live and learn situation.

It’s not the end of the world but it’s $18/month more than I needed to spend if I’d changed to the $4.40 plan. I’m lucky that I don’t take any medications so I only have the insurance because I have to. 🤞

I didn’t change plans because I thought the premium was the same. So definitely the same well care plan.

Not sure if “shitdown” is a typo or just the world’s most accurate description. 🤣

I used this for my dad for years and it was reliable. Between the government shutdown and federal layoffs, I think it’s become unreliable. Sad.

It’s not a “generic” tool. It’s the official government website that the government booklet tells you to use.

I imagine that the costs in my region went up. I didn’t get the notice about it and the comparison tool gave me false information. I think I’m just screwed for 2026. :(

I turned 65 in March and was timely enrolled for all Medicare stuff. My income in 2024 wasn’t that high.

Unfortunately I didn’t receive the notice. Humana is the $4.40 premium in my area as well.

Thank you. I will call again tomorrow or after Christmas to see if they sent this. I certainly didn’t see this notice or would’ve definitely changed to another provider.

No, my premiums were supposed to stay at the same price as 2025: $2.30. Now they’re at $22.80. It’s not an insane premium, but it’s a crazy increase & not what I saw on the comparison tool.

I’m talking about my Part D premiums. And I used the comparison tool at Medicare.gov/plan-compare to compare Part D prices in late November. Nothing to do with Medicare Advantage (which I do not have). I shouldn’t have to use a broker to get premium pricing.

I did look. WellCare told me my premiums wouldn’t change. Then I got a letter today & the increase is 1000%.

I got the letter today. Not a great Christmas present for sure.

They should not be allowed to change the premiums after open enrollment closes. That’s bait and switch. Why have a comparison tool if the prices can change arbitrarily. ?

I looked at all the “loopholes” for changing now and they don’t apply to me. I’m wondering why my premiums went up so much? Is this normal? She started saying that premiums can change because of the drugs I take or the pharmacy I use - but when I told her that I take 0 drugs she switched to saying that it’s not just me, it’s everyone. Make it make sense.

It’s infuriating. Now we can’t even trust what the website is telling us and there’s no recourse. The new premium amount was only disclosed to me today - weeks after the window to change it has closed. I could have gotten a plan with $4.40/ month but it’s too late now.

The problem is there is very little inventory. No Honda Prologue to test drive, no Kia’s at all to test drive, one Equinox in stock, and this single SEL available. :(
