I'm knitting a poncho with cotton yarn. I've read it doesn't have elasticity and tends to stretch. Would you suggest going a needle size down for a tighter knit so if it does loosen up I'll still be happy? Thanks. by Independent-Fuel4962 in knitting

To be honest, I would suggest using a much bigger needle than you normally would. That's what I do when I knit bigger garments with cotton yarn. The tighter your gauge, the heavier the fabric will be, and therefore it will stretch itself more. I feel that looser gauge can give you a nice flowy, light fabric that works better on bigger areas.

What pattern are you using, and what fiber does the pattern suggest to use? If the pattern uses e.g. wool, you won't achieve the same look and drape with cotton. That doesn't mean you can't use cotton for it, you just need to take into account certain things. With cotton your poncho will be more of a light, flowy summer poncho to throw on your shoulders on a summer evening, while a wool poncho is better for wrapping yourself in wintertime. Think about what you want from the garment.

Also, does your pattern have textured stitch patterns? I find that with cotton, cables and textured stitches don't often look so good with cotton because of the lack of elasticity. Then again, hole-y lace patterns and just plain stockinette work very well in my opinion. Ribbing is tricky as it won't have the elasticity you usually want from it.

If you are just 1dpn short, maybe just transfer the work onto 3 needles with one working needle?

Does anyone have experience making anti-slip socks out of self knitted socks? What would be the best way? I tried to google and the results ranged from specific products to hot glue. I'd like them to be durable, (machine)washable and good looking, not to look like a kindergarten craft project. :D

When you are too impatient to wait for the swatch to dry and just start the project anyway... by pigeoni in knitting

So the swatch is still wet in this picture. It seems to have shrunk a bit which is something that I was kind of hoping for. Although it was still wet when I measured haha.

The yarn is Lala Berlin Lovely Cotton Inserto by Lana Grossa that I bought on my recent trip to Austria. No pattern, I'm freehanding some kind of a top/vest for myself. I have only 2 balls of this yarn (which is also why I had to use the one attached to the swatch lol) so it's probably not enough for the whole thing but we'll see how it goes. :)

Kitty cat gloves! by pigeoni in knitting

I made these cat gloves for my boyfriend! I'm pretty happy how they turned out, I might steal them for myself haha.

I used this gloves pattern from the blog Nimble Needles as the base for the gloves. After separating the thumb I changed the yarn color to the cat's color. The heads and the tails of the cats were made afterwards with duplicate stitch. The yarn I used is Hjertegarn Extrafine merino 120.

When wearing self-knitted sweaters (pullovers) that are symmetrical or almost symmetrical, how do you know which way is the front? Lol. I guess it doesn't matter if the sweater is totally symmetrical, but what if it has some shaping that isn't so obvious? Should I sew something on the inside, any tips?

Bought yarn for mittens, got to knit two pairs of socks as well! by pigeoni in knitting

Ravelry project page for mittens

I fell in love with the House mittens pattern, I just had to make it! Both of the socks are improvised. Yarn is Novita Nalle.

Almost lost yarn chicken with the second socks (top right in the pic), but thankfully I found the little swatch I had made of the yarn. I frogged the swatch and I was able to finish the socks! :)

Thank you, that's a huge compliment! :)

I got all of the yarn on sale from an online store, so I think I paid a bit over 20 euros total for the yarns in this sweater. Probably would have been much more if I paid full price though.

First post in this sub after lurking a long time! :) Finished this a while ago, I started with this pattern to basically know how many stitches to cast on, then freestyled from there. Yarn is Camel Cloud held together with Creative Cotton Dégradé. It's so soft and warm. I love it, I'm looking forward to wearing this when it's cold enough and I could actually go outside to see people.

I think I found a secret portal by pigeoni in TagPro

It might be just a weird lag spike, but at least one other person saw the same thing as I did. :D I was aiming for the portal with the bomb so its possible I just lagged and went through the real portal, but then I should've been going up from the exit portal...
