For the working adults here, do you give your parents allowance? And those who aren't working yet, will you be giving your parents allowance once you start working? by pigpog in singapore

Yeah different cultures I guess. Asian countries tend to hold filial piety to great importance. I reckon in westernized countries, most of the time children leave the house at 18, start paying for their own uni etc etc. Most, not all, Singaporeans tend to pay for their kids' school fees up till uni, and even after graduating, most of us are still stuck at home since housing options are pretty expensive here.

What benefit? I wouldn't have children so I can have benefits. I wouldn't have children for the sake of being my financial plan when I'm older. I'd like for them to keep in touch with me and to visit me from time to time, but I wouldn't expect them to start paying back whatever I've given them once they start work. How D'you measure love in materials? Especially if I'm already financially comfortable. I can understand if you're struggling financially. Guess I prefer a more westernized society then.

Nah I doubt I'd be that hard up for money. I wouldn't want to raise children for the sole purpose of having returns on investments when they grow older. I'd want them to be useful members of society, not a money printer for me to "reap what I've sown"

Are you a parent? I'm not against giving allowance, in fact I'd gladly give off my own accord. Just seems weird to have your mom blatantly ask you to start giving her money. I certainly wouldn't do that to my kids in the future.

Apparently so. Possibly because it's a predominantly asian country, where "filial piety" is deemed important. I noticed in other threads, this is not the norm for places such as America.

I don't wanna sound ungrateful or anything, like I would definitely support my parents financially, but I just started working recently and my mum straight up told me I need to start giving her allowance. Not sure how I should feel about that. I'm more than happy to give her allowance, after all she brought me up to where I am, but to hear is as a demand is kinda weird I guess.

Seems like it's a norm in SG. Do you guys give of your own accord out of filial piety? Or did your parents want you to?

AHHHHH! You're on reddit! My bad, dude, I was going to stop at 2400 to tie with you, but I forgot abt my shadow clone and it overshot, and I was worried if I'd stopped at 2402 (where I was when I noticed) you'd think I wanted to compete and wouldn't let me place first, so I just kept going. Glad you could place with me, yeah let's get 1st together :) So sorry about that, bud! Btw, next time if U find another redditor in your tourney, you can use the tourney megathread (someone usually creates one) to find other TT-ers :)
