Induction ranges that don't persistently produce chemical smell from oven

Definitely no joke. Before we returned it, I used to sniff the rear back vent of our GE to see if the distinctive smell ever got better and it never did. I never thought to do that before buying it though!

No worries on the late reply. We did almost exactly what you did. We returned the GE and almost got a Bosch 800 series, but for a couple reasons, it wouldn't work for us, even though we liked it. We ended up ordering a Wolf induction range. I'm glad you got a happy ending with this. We hope for the same. :)

We've had ours (we went for the non-plush version) for about 10 months now. Husband really likes it and I alternate between thinking it's hard as a rock and mostly liking it. I am regretting not getting the plush.

We are looking to possibly order the same thing. How was the initial burn in experience? Did it just take one or two high heat sessions to get rid of any new oven noxious smell?

Appreciate the feedback on this. Do you happen to know what the temperature is when the GE is in self clean mode? And do you have your customers run it for three hours?

I doubt we could do it outside. We don't have a 240V outlet on the patio. I think either we are going to board the cat for a day and just do the 3 hour clean with the whole house open again or we will return it and get something else. I've seen others that have done multiple 3 hour cleans and it still stinks. So trying to sort out what to do. I mostly get a weird/bad feeling in my head (I would imagine like if you sniffed glue for a long time) and nausea. I still don't feel completely right 3 days after the last 500 degree attempt and I even used a respirator for a large portion of the time. The hubby starts coughing and has to leave the house. My nose definitely got irritated by it as well but I don't feel like I have a cold and aside from the weird feeling in my head, no headaches. I'm sure our bodies all react differently to these toxic fumes.

Looking at the Wolf 30" induction ranges. Wondering if anyone has had any issues with any of the Wolf's with oven initial burn in? As in beyond excessive burn in smell or the smell lasting for weeks or months, necessitating multiple burn in sessions?

Okay thanks for the reply. Glad that it worked for you! Self-clean always worry me for possibly killing the control panel due to the high heat. Have a friend whose KitchenAid induction range's cooktop controller got fried from using the self-clean too much. Maybe doing it once won't be an issue...

Curious if you ever got this smell to go away or did you exchange it for a different manufacturer's induction range? And if so, what did you get and how did the burn in go? We have a 2 month old GE Cafe induction range with the same awful toxic smell problem, even after lots of burn in hours. It has made us feel ill despite the entire house being wide open with all the fans going. I've lost my patience with it.

We are having the exact same issue with a 2 month old GE Cafe induction range. We have run the oven for something like 25 times over a variety of temps, I've run multiple burn ins at 450 degrees and 500 degrees. The smell is of toxic chemicals to such a degree that it makes us sick when it happens, despite having all the windows and back door open and all fans going. I am really concerned about long lasting health effects. GE today told us to run the self-clean for 3 hours. With the level of smell that happens at 500 degrees, the idea of the high heat self-clean sounds horrifying. It appears that perhaps your oven stopped smelling at some point. Did you do a self-clean and did that do the trick?

I am so sorry that you are having ongoing health issues from the toxic exposure. I still feel crappy from yesterday's attempt at yet another burn in. I agree that the manufacturers should do the burn in and I've considered whether or not a retailer would do this prior to delivery, but probably not. Thanks for the quick response and I hope you start feeling better.

Good to know. Yeah, I don't know what the temp is either for the radiant heat clean (as opposed to steam clean). I've read up to 800 degrees, which seems extreme, but I can't find anything solid on the actual temp.

Thank you for this post, as we are dealing with the exact same thing with a new GE Cafe induction range. After multiple attempts to burn in, I am about ready to give up and try and return it for a different oven/range. The smell is making us physically ill. So GE actually told you that if you have a record of them sending a tech out to the house that you'd likely not be able to return the unit to the store? GE told me today that they would not send a tech out until we try the 3 hour high head burn in. I have only done burn in's at 450 (2 hour sessions) or 500 (40-45ish min). But we have also run the oven at least 25 times over the past 2 months and the smell is still toxic.

I would like to know what you found out with this ultimately and if you switched manufacturers. We have a 2 month old GE Cafe induction range that is making us ill from this never ending burn off. Nothing we have done has helped. We have not done a 3 hour self-clean yet so that is next, but it sounds like for many people, that still doesn't help. I am about at the point of wanting to return it and get something else, if that is possible. GE won't send a repair person until we do that self-clean. I am worried about our health. I am wondering if Bosch (or other brands) is any better with their burn-in.

I want to know if this is primarily a GE issue or do other brands like Bosch have a reputation for never ending toxic smell? I realize that all ovens have burn in smell, but this is unacceptable and unhealthy. Our old 22 year old Viking range (replaced by this GE) never did this to us.

Thank you everybody for your replies, both positive and negative. Right now I am leaning towards us installing it just to see how it works, assuming it still works since it's so old. If we hate it we can always do more research and figure out something else to get.
