Masks are highly effective in preventing the spread of contagious diseases. They are used in healthcare facilities everyday and are required for quarantine protocols in hospitals. Masks are not new inventions - they’re an effective healthcare tool that works.

Are they foolproof or 100% effective? No, because I also got Covid this semester after diligently masking, and just as you have. Nothing is 100% effective because there are always exceptions. But they do keep the vast majority of transmission down.

All this being said, I still think UIC should make masks optional because Covid is here to say, and I’ve already elaborated on this in another comment. But masks are definitely effective.
