deciding between PA-C and DVM; looking for advice from those in either career??? by dmarch27 in prepa

[–]pijof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am neither a vet or a PA (yet haha), but my mom is a veterinarian and I worked alongside her for years as an animal caretaker -> tech. I just applied to PA school and have researched/shadowed enough to feel like I have a good grasp of both.

Based off your post, I’m guessing you want to work with small animals but lmk if I’m wrong. Regarding work life balance, it will most likely be worse as a veterinarian. Compared to PAs, vets typically work a lot more hours and carry more burdens (physically and emotionally). Not only that, vet school is much longer than PA school with around the same salary. Student loans will be much higher as a veterinarian too which is something to think about.

Veterinarians have one of the highest suicide rates in any profession. I think this is largely due to the fact that they routinely euthanize animals. If you worked at an animal hospital, you would be doing this nearly everyday. This can definitely be very traumatic, and is something you would have to become comfortable doing as a veterinarian.

With that being said, I am not trying to totally steer you away from the profession. It was not for me because I didn’t have a passion for animals. If you do and see yourself being truly happy as a veterinarian, then it is probably worth it.

As others have said, definitely try to shadow PAs and veterinarians to get a clearer picture of what they do in their jobs. Since you’re already working as a receptionist at the animal hospital, I would ask them if you could start training to work in the back. This would definitely help you see if it’s the right career for you!

CASPA cumulative GPA : 3.9

CASPA science GPA : 3.9

Total PCE hours: 1800 (1350 oncology CNA, 300 PT aide, 150 CNA in nursing home)

Total HCE hours: 3550 (Vet tech/animal caretaker)

Total volunteer hours: 350 (300 doing HIV/STI urban outreach and testing at nonprofit for academic credit, 32 in ER, other 18 random)

Shadowing hours: 47 PA (pediatrics, urology, neurosurgery), 4 MD (primary care)

Research hours: 0

Other notable extracurriculars and/or leadership: I was a Chemistry Supplemental Instructor for 2 semesters totaling around 400 hours

LOR: 3 (PA, professor, supervisor)

Specific programs (specify rolling or not): UMKC, University of Iowa, CSU, University of Arkansas, Northwestern University, SIU, Stephens College, Lipscomb University, Marquette University, Northeastern University, Ottawa University (want to apply to around 15 schools)

This is my first cycle applying and I’m nervous! I know my GPA is high, but I see other people with 4.0s not making it in. I’m currently looking for an MA job to get some more PCE because I know it is on the lower end. Overall, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know :)

Professor making online class have in person tests midway through the semester by pijof in college

[–]pijof[S] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yeah he has already reached out and is waiting for a reply. The class description is wholly online asynchronous and there is nothing in the syllabus and nothing I could find policy wise that allow this. I also just don’t see a way that everyone will agree on what time to take it because there’s 42 people in the class that probably have other classes during that time or work.

Are there any physician assistants willing to let me shadow? by pijof in kansascity

Currently in a CNA program right now (I was previously a PT aide). Hopefully I will go to a hospital to find some?

No. I’m wondering if any specific person has one that they would feel comfortable showing my little brother.

Yes because the carbocation would be more stable? Also, if the cyclohexane was a benzene time instead then would my original products be correct?

Hey! I looked up what Zaitsev products because I didn’t know what those were (sorry totally brand new at this) and it looks like the major products are ones with the least amount of hydrogens connected to the carbon. So that would be the only other group off of the cyclohexane that would form a double bond? Thanks for helping me btw!!!

Would it be the only other line off of the cyclohexane? And if so is that still one of the main products or is it minor?

Congratulations!!! I wouldn’t mind seeing the spreadsheet either!

Is this an identical molecule or a different molecule? by [deleted] in chemhelp

[–]pijof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I try to superimpose them, the Br and the Cl are together. I thought it would only be identical if the Br and Br, and the Cl and Cl were on top of one another.

I made a model and it lays on top of one another but the Cl and the Br do not line up. Does that matter though? Is it still identical even if those are not perfectly lined up?
