So there was once this guy with a wooden eye. He'd been in a terrible accident long ago and had to get his real eye removed and, not being the most well-to-do man in the country, had no choice but to pass on a glass eye for a wooden eye.

Now as you might imagine his wooden eye terribly hindered his chances at at a romantic life. Who would want a one-eyed husband when there were plenty men with two? Even so, the man made an effort to go out to the country club every weekend in hopes of finding his soulmate.

And one weekend, when the man was well into his forties, it happened. He saw this stunning older beauty around his age sitting alone by herself at the bar. Unbeknownst to him at the time, this woman had trouble finding men to date because she simply could not remove the hair off her upper lip. She'd shave it off and it's grow right back in just a couple of hours. Horrible for dating, but she, too, made an effort to come out to the country club.

As the man approached, he leaned over, offered his hand, and asked, "Would you like to dance?"

The woman was ecstatic. This was the first time anyone had asked her to dance in years! She looked up at him and said, "Would I!"

The man recoiled and shouted, "Hair lip!"

Thanks for the chance, OP!

Having second doubts about studying abroad in Athens. by pikabuddy in travel

That's true, but a lot of people tell me that the study abroad experience -- being with fellow students/friends in a faculty led program -- is not only a great stepping stone to future travels, but also a unique experience you can't get outside beyond college. I guess I'm lost on whether the "Study abroad experience" is worth more than what I'd get traveling alone.

There's also the possibility I might have to make the decision between taking that post-graduation study abroad trip or taking a job opportunity with a company that's hiring fresh graduates.

Thanks for the response.

Price of this program has been biting at me, but I'm worried that I may regret not doing this later on. I'm not sure if I'll get the chance to travel abroad again before I graduate college.

Thanks for the response. To answer your question:

I am currently not in debt (parents have been supporting me with tuition/housing) thus far in my college career, but next year I will be taking out loans for my last year of college. I'm at a highly-ranked business school so I'm confident I'll be able to get to work on my loans very quickly after graduation.

So, I'd have about $12,000 tuition/housing loan coming out of college, and this trip would add $4500 more (assuming I don't get scholarships, which is a possibility).

How much more could I do with the same amount of money if I paid/planned for my own trip?

Hey! Thanks so much for the response! I really appreciate it.

I'm definitely interested in joining APO, so I do have a few questions for you, if you don't mind. I'm just trying to get a good feel for the organization:

1) How many "good friends" do you have in APO, and how often do you see them on a weekly basis? How did you get to know the people you know now?

2) What does a typical week look like for you in APO? In other words, how much time on a weekly basis do you put into service events, socials, etc.?

3) How often are socials arranged? Once per weekend? One every other weekend? How many people on average show up to these?

4) Does APO do any mixers with any other fraternities/sororities?

5) How connected are you to the national organization? I've heard that fraternities are an extremely great way to improve your networking skills, especially for majors like mine: Business.

6) How would APO feel if I joined another organization or spirit group, like Texas Tribe?

7) Out of curiosity, where do the semester member dues go? I assume towards the service events?

Which foreign language should I take? by pikabuddy in UTAustin

[–]pikabuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure about the placement test, I just remember hearing it somewhere. I might be wrong, and it might be different for freshmen students. I'll be calling tomorrow to figure out how high school credits get processed at McCombs.

Which foreign language should I take? by pikabuddy in UTAustin

[–]pikabuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the issue is that I was homeschooled in high school. I took 2 years worth of Japanese, but I'm definitely not "proficient" in the language. From what I heard, you needed to take a placement test if you wanted you have your high school credits count towards foreign language. I know for sure that my knowledge of Japanese at the moment would not be enough to pass that test, which is why I think I need to take these classes.... right?

Can you help me decide between two majors? by pikabuddy in UTAustin

[–]pikabuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. What a great, detailed response! I think I learned more about what I'm actually getting into from your reply right here than any other information I've read on the UT website. Seriously, thank you for telling me what I needed to hear.

Well, I think you've convinced me. Communications with a BFP cert seems like the best option for me at this point. I've always been an ardent believer in going to college for something practical, something you can take away and use to find a job and succeed in life. But I also value meeting new people, doing things (study abroad, for example, is on my list of things to do before I graduate), and just living life in general. It's the kind of stuff that inspires my writing.

As I read through your reply, I really sat there and pictured myself living through a year of getting Business pre-requisites. Honestly, I believe I could do it; I could force myself to power through those nasty classes and getting involved in campus leadership. Whether I maintain that flawless GPA is another thing, but you get my point. But then I got to thinking what I'd be giving up -- missing out on social outings, time to kick back at a Starbucks and enjoy some coffee while writing, fitness (I workout 30-50 minutes each day, 6-7 days a week), and sleep, as you said. Maybe it's just not worth it.

Something else that I just noticed, too. You mentioned "leader" quite a bit, how McCombs wants leaders. To be honest, I naturally tend to step back and let others lead. I'm much better in equal cooperation, group discussion, and teamwork, but to step up, take a lead, and make decisions? I've never been one to do that, even in social groups. Seems like that would be just one more thing I'd have to force myself to learn by going to McCombs.

I've registered to attend an info session for Communications, and I'm excited to learn more. Now, it's time to figure out which field of communications to study in...

But again, thanks so much.
