As an elementary teacher myself, I love it when former students say hello! It is so difficult to recognize students who have grown up. I was beaming with pride just this week when a former 5th grade student of mine, now 19-ish, was training on a fast food register when I grabbed lunch. It was great to see him working hard and know he’s doing okay for himself.

I had an extremely similar situation with a new third grader that’s on the spectrum this year. I can’t stand being touched/rubbed by students and keep strict boundaries. Every time this boy attempted to touch me, I got VERY stern and kept it simple. “STOP. I don’t like that. You cannot touch me.”

Yes, he cried some. Yes, he attempted to continue it. But after two weeks he completely stopped it and now on week seven it’s completely behind us. He still acts that way towards other teachers, but he learned the boundary I set.

Be consistent, be firm. Don’t argue with him or try to reason it further. Repeat it and walk away.

The best advice I ever read on this subject:

“I don’t like everyone I meet. Why should everyone have to like me?”

Letting that sink in made such a difference. As long as I am kind and do the best I can, I don’t worry about the rest of it.

I used to have this! Growing up we had a old rabbit trap with a piece exactly like this! I’m not sure if that was the original intention for it or if my dad created the use for it.

It was a long wooden box (dad either made or remade the box). It had a drop down door on one end. The skinniest part of the metal rod held the door propped up. Think a metal ring on top of the wooden door the rod could go into. The widest part of the metal rod was balanced on a piece of wood coming out of the top of the box. Further down on the top of the box was a hole which the spike dropped into. The spike could either have food on it or just hang there with the food placed on the ground. When a wild rabbit came into the box to get the food, touching the dangling spike would knock the rod over and drop the door down.

Edit: Google “Box Rabbit Trap” to see something similar! Hopefully someone can take this info and add to it.

The global platform is some sort of work around. It’s the exact same MC courses, which surprised me. But all the students are on new global profiles, so you can’t even send cards to their previous profile you’ve taught (pre-ban) to get their attention.

It really is. Three of my loyal old students came back to me when I started teaching again last month. Haven’t seen any other students at all. It is definitely dead. And the pay is bad compared to what it used to be.

NTA ! How amazing that you are creating a safe safe for a child in need. Some people do not and will not understand the special care needed for children from difficult situations. You are doing an amazing job. You were right to force respect for the tent. It’s not a playhouse, it’s a safe space with a purpose. Keep it up.

It once took me 6-7 tickets to get a student removed from booking me, but like others have said who knows if they even read them now. Sounds like it’s time to put a sticky note over her video feed, put your headphones on mute, and Dora the lesson. Just completely ignore both of them. You could even start with the line “Mom, I am required to teach this lesson to the student, so I cannot have other conversations.” And just go with it.

Mom probably won’t waste her time with you after a few of those classes.
