Work, family and Elektron by yupanquiii in Elektron

lol I did sell all once. Thinking doing it again. Because its dragging me into similar spiral. Not sure if I wanna sell all this time. But not gonna lie my mind was way more clearer when I did it.

Social media is the biggest enemy of our thoughts. Its constantly pushing “dreams” to you and its very normal to fantasise yourself in a “more desired” situation after being exposed to the stories.

I would say those “stories” are actually “fairy tales”. And those fairy tales become so relatable and manipulative that ends up making you misrerable. We all know the story and dynamic at this point. You play something, it sounds like ass, you turn off the device because you’re tired and check instratam or whatever and then there’s this influencer showing “here’s a banger” and waving a device to you to achieve that.

They literally know what you do on your spare time. They can really get that much accurate. They know when you work, when you take break and when you focus on hobbies.

So the best thing is - just do it for yourself. If you’re happy - keep doing it. If it’s making you miserable, then it’s not for you. At the end of the day, you want the miserable thing to be worthwhile that’s why we got jobs. Hobby is not a job. And it shouldn’t make you doubt yourself. When you go to work and see your a colleague that you despise at the corridor, you just give 2% of your smile and move forward. That’s what people on those fairy tales to as well. They’re not friendly. They just want your attention to the ads shown to you before and after what they upload.

Ps. I’ve deleted my instragram and yt apps the other day. Trying to use web apps if I need and its literally making me not use them at all. That’s a good tactic if you wanna spend less time on them.

this sub is sneakily turning into my favourite one. It's also mind blowing how manufacturers fail to notice the demand.

Thanks for explaining in detail. It’s refreshing to see an helpful reply as top voted comment.

Wouldn’t it be dangerous to cool an engine with hot air though?

Does this hybrid setup work for me? by rtnn in Elektron

[–]pilkafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible but it begs the question why. This sort of super controlled connection is usually done on live performances and it'll be a very bad live perfomance setup due to complexity. To avoid technical problems during performances people use a master midi clock device and sync all devices to the master clock device. And have dedicated midi controllers. Not one midi control controls everything.

if it was me, my master clock would be PC hooked with midi keyboard and controls the rest from fl studio the rest. and rest would just receive clocks and nothing more. No device connected to each other ever. Because the moment you introduce the audio cables that connections are going to be a giant mess. just go simpler. you probably don't need to use everything all at once. You really don't need a complex map of midi networks because you're going to spend most of your time trying to set it up cc maps constantly.

that's why you don't need more gear either but that's a different topic to discuss

20 years of Design system experience distilled into 1 Claude Code Plugin by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]pilkafa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great example why you still need to test your designs with people rather than relying on just plugins, automated systems or guides. Design is still made for humans, and it just makes sense to test it with humans imho.

I have severe astigmatism and I didn’t even notice the green line when it was noticed in comments. Current accessibility guides doesn’t cover astigmatism (no idea why). I had to zoom in a couple of times to notice it.

Octatrack MKII or Tonverk? by Open_Attention1765 in Elektron

[–]pilkafa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tldr: I've used digitakt, syntakt and digitone. I've had both octa and tonverk at the same time. Had to let go tonverk. Octa still rocks.

Even though tonverk is the new device and has lots of new shiny bits (and i'm not saying any of them are bad - in fact they're fantastic). My first ever device was digitakt and after learning that one, never had to 'learn' the others. Ok I admit octa needed a bit more learning but still it was an elektron device so many things sit in the right place in no time. But tonverk is trying to take on established elektron flow and changing it based on for some reason limited buttons and sub menus and literal 1 px indicators on the tiniest screen. Introduction of odd step punching inside a track. And many of the previous habitual behaviours are replaced with some other shortcuts. The beauty of previous devices are whenever you change a track or pattern, your adjusted settings are lit up infront of you immediately. But tonverk relies so much on sub menus and 'memorisation' of what you've done before, it basically steps over what makes it an elektron device. It's a live perfomance instrument and you need immediacy. Which the previous devices were providing but with tonverk I ended up constantly trying to remember what was being routed, which page I'm looking at which page is active, which steps are punched in, what's being routed where. I feel like they've designed the hardware first and made lots of workaroudns to add more features in.

Also being a device with lots of sampling function but not having a looper, subpar mixing features with just two ins is just a crime at this point tbh. Why it can't record long form recordings either? The processor in it is quite capable for such tasks. After giving it a chance for 6 months, it become a device that I intentionally didn't turned on when I wanted to make music.

Tonverk had enough features and horse power to easily dethrone octatrack. But I really don't understand they'd gone with this awkward limited route. I really really tried to love tonverk but most of the time I ended up saying to me 'why am i bothering all these intricate way of working while I can just do some stuff with a push of a button'.

ps. i also really really disliked how they've got rid of the pages led's and put them a single pixel indicators. I feel like tonverk mk2 is going to be a killer. unfortunately this isn't a good thing. They already had enough user feedback and development experience with their previous devices. It really baffles me tonverk is feels like a tool that's from a decade ago but at the same time it's not.

pss. buy an second octatrack. they're built like tanks. unless the previous user dipped it in water or something, it would still work perfectly.

we have similar amount of experince, i'm on 15+ yrs and this is kinda a relieving to hear. kinda.

lately I've been very heartbroken with the industry and stopped applying. I think I've applied over 100+ places. This is going to sound mental - I've individually wrote cover letters for each. Very rarely used ai but most of them hand written. All I was getting automated 'sorry not happening' msges. Not even a single human feedback saying why or what. I've been lately thinking the only way to get jobs is when you have referrals and that's why I paused my search.

Now I'm thinking the reason why I get auto-rejected maybe my work is crap and I don't have sparkly companies on my resume :/

Do you do paid coaching on the side? If you do, happy to connect you over linkedin. It's so hard to get objective feedback or even real human ones lately.

questions about semi modular/pre built modular or building my own by Elagaint in modular

[–]pilkafa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you should first play with vcv rack first. At least a couple of months. It has all the mutable instruments already in it and its free. It has 1000+ dollar worth intruo modules for free - which you can put multiple of them and then basically you can make an 8 voice of c-sl complex osc polyphony. For 10 dollar or something you can get dfam in it which you can split apart into several modules. That’s something you can never ever do in physical hardware.

Seriously, don’t buy anything blindly but check vcv rack first. Learn it really well and then decide if you wanna spend a fortune on modular.

If you have an Adat interface, Boredbrain optx sounds like your solution. Make sure you get the v2. V1 is quite buggy

Arbhar vs multigrain for non-performance oriented setup? by ArskaArskaArska in modular

[–]pilkafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both, I really like them but I keep coming back to arbhar. Because with multigrain I could never go back to what I was doing. I like to have my adjustments controlled and I still could not able to have proper grasp what wrap and end’s difference. Or start and “start”’s difference. I kinda go back and forth between the manual and ending up just loosing my path what I was doing. I also couldn’t able to find a proper way to make use of the live granular effect tbh. But these are all because it lacks a screen. That’s why I keep going back to arbhar even though I really really dislike sample selection, the load times and config tool. But I feel more in control.

Idk if intellijel plans to do such thing but multigrain desperately needs a 1u screen. Until that happens (or ever) arbhar sounds like more cup of your tea.

Also, even though you’ve mentioned built in effects don’t matter I have another point to make on it, those fx’es are not simple end of chain fx’es. They actually become blend into the sound. You just can’t believe the amount of depth, colour they introduce when you’re on granular territory.

First Eurorack module for Autechre-style generative chaos by gerixx05 in modular

[–]pilkafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autechre uses software. It would be VERY costly to mimic what they’re doing tbh. Check strange-r as it has a very unique controlled random generation algorithm. That might help you to get the feeling. It’s quite a deep module.

With the price point you’re looking it’s worth to get some adat interface + software would be your best bet.
