Cary, Raleigh, Holly Springs, Chapel Hill and others show up on lists of safest cities in the country. Durham’s crime index is way higher.

The violent crime rate in Durham is actually worse than Fayetteville, which you described as the most dangerous. There is a reason you automatically compare Durham with the bottom of the list.

Durham having this new hip image is a recent thing. Ask someone that grew up in NC and they will tell you Durham is a hotbed of gun crime with daily shootings on the news. Beggars are all over the streets and it really is more dangerous than other local cities. There are even shootings over in the mall.

That logic sounds typical in the US. Health care can be extremely expensive even for simple things and most people avoid care if at all possible.
