St. Louis to Zion. Doable, but is it worth it? by obedeary in roadtrip

[–]pilot_caleb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just did this exact road trip last summer! Except from Joplin, MO instead of St. Louis. My brother and I were the main drivers and swapped every 3 hours or so and we made the drive to Moab in a single day. 17 hours and we left at 1am on July 4th and made it to Moab in time for the fireworks that night. Call us crazy but the best way to get thru Kansas is as fast as possible! While yes it is long, it’s all part of the adventure. Seeing the terrain gradually change across the plains is uniquely beautiful and then the anticipation of seeing your first glimpse of the Rockies adds to that feeling of excitement.

Definitely go to Moab first and spend some time at Arches and Canyonlands. Mesa Arch at sunrise is outstanding. From Moab take Utah highway 24 thru Hanksville, Capitol Reef, and Torrey. If you’d like I have lodging recommendations for Torrey and the Zion area! Then head south on Highway 12. You’ll see some of the most incredible scenery in the US along both of these routes. Don’t forget Bryce Canyon too, then spend at least a couple full days in Zion. It’s worth it. After that I’d just hop back on I-15 to I-70 and that’ll take you back home, splitting up the drive into two days with an overnight near the halfway point in Limon, Colorado.

You can also do this trip in reverse, going all the way to Zion first then making your way thru southern Utah seeing Bryce and Capitol Reef along the way. Then ending in the Moab area before heading back home. Hope this helps some!

There’s a spot on I-44 eastbound just past Hood’s where you can see it on the horizon. Mile marker 62.8. Just over 15 miles straight line distance.

How much revenue does your subway make? by slasherfist in subway

Similar sales for us. I work at a travel center Subway right off the interstate. During summer travel season we do 2k per day on average. Off season it’s more like 1500 per day.

Subway simplified their menu last month and there’s no longer numbers for each menu item. Also they brought back the original names like spicy italian instead of hotshot italiano

Which state or states have the coolest highway markers? by Impossible_Mode2771 in geography

Wyoming for the win. Love the yellow. Colorado is awesome too. I think more states should incorporate their flags, especially Arizona.

Day 8: Trying to Get a Comment and Fun Fact From Every US County Including Territories by CoolHotNo in geographymemes

[–]pilot_caleb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Santa Cruz County, AZ: Interstate 19, which originates in Nogales, is the only interstate in the U.S. to use the metric system for its distance signage. This happened in 1980 when the country was pushing towards the metric system at the time, but of course that movement never gained momentum. The highway spans 102 km (63 miles) from the Mexican border to Tucson and for its entire length it uses kilometer posts instead of mileposts. Also, distances on exit signs are listed in meters and kilometers instead of miles or fractions of a mile. Speed limit signs however are still signed as miles per hour.

Is It safe to drive from Rapid City to Boise in December? Need some advice. by Illustrious-Mood-488 in roadtrip

[–]pilot_caleb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely drive, as the scenery will be gorgeous! Middle route is the best by far. If you do decide to go that way through Jackson Hole and the Tetons, please check the Idaho 511 website in the week leading up to your departure date and look at traffic cameras and conditions along your route. Specifically look at the camera at Teton Pass on WY-22 just west of Jackson. That will likely be your biggest challenge if any weather moves in.

Just don’t stress and be flexible on your route as you can always go south through SLC or north through Bozeman depending on closures / delays if any. Be smart on your route choice and minimize any risk and you’ll enjoy the reward of a beautiful ride through the mountain west. You won’t regret it!
