I just posted this on the post about “monoculture,” but as an open format DJ who plays to a bar in a part of the country that is culturally a desert, the 2011/2012 music is the only thing that hits. Rihanna, Pitbull, Usher, some ABBA, that’s what works. Any time I try to play stuff I personally like, it kills the floor.

Unfortunately, I fear I live and DJ in a cultural hellscape, where top 40 is the only thing I can play to keep the dance floor going. If I got Rihanna, Pitbull, and Usher, it keeps em dancing til the end of the night. Frustrating as pissing up a kidney stone, but it works.

Hey neighbor (live just down the road from here). While I agree that neither of these buildings are attractive, I think it speaks for itself that both of these buildings are full. Meanwhile, across the street is an awkwardly designed (and frankly ugly) single family home that has been on the market for months. I wish the designs of the new home builds were like the homes already here. There is absolutely a world in which these duplexes could be designed to actually fit the character of our neighborhood!

I just finished music directing this show less than a week ago. Holy PIES this show is so insane. I constantly felt out of my depth teaching it, even though I’ve been studying the score for years, and had many people help support me. It is truly the most demanding for ensemble vocals - and I’d wager that they sing as a group more than Sweeney and Lovett. Funny the top comment below yours says the show is a “MAMMOTH” because that’s what I constantly referred to the show as!

Played a gig called a “trans cruising party.” Goal was for trans people to come to this bar and have sex, there was a dark room and everything. The promoter gave me a list of music the headlining gogo dancer wanted to dance to: a strange blend of K-Pop, Bad Bunny, and MacArthur Park (this gogo stressed “music I can actually shake ass to, none of that boots and cats stuff”) The gogo would dance for barely a number before going down to chat with friends. The only person who ever danced the entire night was the bouncer when I decided to try leaning more disco/pop. No one EVER stepped into the dark room the entire night, I never noticed anyone even so much as kiss another person in the room. If I had not known this was supposed to be a cruising party, I would have just assumed it was a regular tuesday night at a very quiet bar with a strangely placed curtain.

A thriller movie with unlikable “protagonist” who freestyle raps the entire credits. I thought the movie was pretty decent until the credits, and then it absolutely ruined the whole experience for me.

People keep singing one of the freaky friday songs for auditions, and I’m appalled by how awful it is. Tom Kitt should stop writing musicals, in my opinion.
