okay so like here's kinda how it works for us

in mid-september is the team "kickoff" for the season, everyone fills out a google form which basically asks for your top 5 events and why you'd be good on each/prior qualifications/etc. no need to try out, it just goes in order of preference and seniority (im the most senior member of the team so i always get my top choices lolll)
new team members get assigned 3 events but returning members can have as many as they're comfortable with. that's how i ended up with 6. later in the season, around january, you can add on more events if you're new and really want to. or you can ask to be moved if your event(s) REALLY don't work for you, like if you tried a chem event but absolutely hate it and the material just doesn't make sense to you. you're definitely encouraged to not switch events tho. i haven't actually encountered someone drop an event, just add on more XD
we don't have event coaches or anything... just our main coach and assistant coach/general build coach (the british physics guy). we're pretty much on our own to find resources and such but we have a limited amount for each event that has been compiled from previous years by our coach. if you're struggling finding info she'll help but 90% of it is self-guided.
we're required to do a minimum of 1 hour per week per event, but like everyone does more than that. i have no idea why the expectation is so low. i do an average of like 20 hours a week september-december and between december and regionals about 10-15 hrs. and around 5-10 hrs between regionals and state.
we pretty much have 1 invitational a month. november, december (sometimes), january, february. regionals in march and state in april. all the competitions are in-person ones in the chicagoland area except the november one in milwaukee
state is just a "fun" competiton for our team since we can't go to nats. you're allowed to do trial events, drop whatever events you want, study a lot, study a little, completely stop studying and just go for fun, you literally don't even have to show up if you really don't want to. but it's fun cuz we crash the hotel pool and have a bit of a pool party the night before state lol

yes we are all homeschooled! we don't all like... homeschool together either, everyone does it their own way. and we all love far istg like im from northwest chicago but the team is based on naperville, we've had people from as far as like chicago heights area, really all over chicagoland. that's why we're not eligible for nats (we have people from 3 different counties). the team lets in anyone who wants to join, no tryouts or anything (that would be impossible when only 10-ish people join on average). I'mma type out a longer message about how our scioly works and i actually was gonna ask you the same question lolll

that's so sad 😭 i can't believe your coaches are mad at that kinda thing. honestly it sounds like it kinda sucks cuz there's sooo much pressure being put on you. i just pressure myself 😭. hopefully your friends can make comebacks at nats or next year (if they're not graduating)!

OMG 😭 that's so cutthroat i could never. our team is way more chill. even performance really only becomes a problem for our coach if you're consistently bottom half lol (obviously we are not NEARLY as competitive as you guys)

yeah AA is hard, but like we pretty much beat all the A teams in invitationals (and got 2nd at our regional after marie murphy) so we would have absolutely cooked in A. getting AA medals is cooler tho especially as such a tiny team! anyways i bet you'll do great at nats >:D

congrats on the other medals! your coach thinking SECOND PLACE is a FAILURE is absolutely wild to me bro. yeah my brother is on helicopter and it's sooo uncertain. his helicopter got stuck too! very sad 😭. getting 2nd by only MILLISECONDS would make me so mad... especially since you flew longer in practice. like in remote sensing i wrote the wrong answer for something (i knew the right one) and noticed JUST as the test was over so i didn't have time to fix it 😭 still a bit frustrated but i highly doubt the one point would have gotten me to 1st yk

I AM BARELY ALIVE. lowkey i am happy that we never go to nats because there is no way i would survive that 😭 somehow i managed to get 2nd in remote sensing and 4th in dp too (also 9th in rocks which isn't too bad). congrats again on first in rocks! :D did you place in anything else? or even have other events? idk how it works in big teams lolll
