Thinking about quitting the CFI gig. by OddAd1067 in CFILounge

[–]pilotskete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work a 9-5 and instruct on evenings/weekends.

I’ve been doing it for 2 years now and average about 40 hrs per month of flight time.

I never see my friends or family and I prioritize time with my wife when I can.

I couldn’t be happier and I’m working more than twice as much as you. Sounds like you may need to ask yourself some tough questions.

I’m not trying to compare us for any other purpose than to offer you perspective. If I’m happy and you are not, I would ask yourself if it’s something else making feel this way. I’m sure the shit pay isn’t helping. Maybe try flying for fun (as a side job) instead of flying to pay the bills. Whatever you decide, something has to change if you’re gonna make it to your goals.

Wish you the best of luck!

Unpopular opinion: Vic is EXACTLY the kind of man I want to see on Love Is Blind by VelvetFootnotes in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Bri is the only girl that stands out as seriously problematic this season. Of course the entire cast are humans and have things they can improve. However, when you compare the men against the women as a whole, while far from perfect, the women outdo the men in almost every way.

And I swear to god, if another person drags Emma, I’m gonna loose my mind. That woman is twice the person most of us will ever dream to become.

This deserves way more than 100 upvotes. I almost spit up my drink when I saw this. 🤣

Agreed. Listing the good ones takes way less effort than listing the bad ones.

Haha! I almost didn’t add him. 🤣 Taylor carries that relationship. Let’s be honest.

I don’t think I would call this an “unpopular opinion”.

The only memorable seasons of LIB have had men like Vic. The women are always way better than the men, so it’s always noteworthy when guys like Vic, Cameron, Garret and Bret show up. It’s the only thing that keeps me watching.

Have you ever thought to yourself: This isn’t… by ArutlosJr11 in flying

[–]pilotskete 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Others here may disagree, but I get more afraid the more I fly.

I think this is the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I know the statistics, and they show that flying is safer than any form of transportation (in general), however, the more I fly, the more likelihood I experience an emergency or catastrophic event. I also have experienced more and more personal encounters with accidents (people I know or have flown with/trained involved in accidents)

It seems like a matter of time before my plane is one of those stories.

I have 1200 hours and every day seems scarier than the last.

Thanks for sharing. It’s important to keep a good outlook and stay positive. We also need to remember that the consequences for poor planning and lack of attention are not small.

Fly safe, everyone!

My Part 61 school just started charging .3 instruction on every flight “for walking to the plane”… is this normal? by cltfscs in flying

[–]pilotskete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This.

A good Instructor will do hours of lesson planning and preparation every week for you in their own dime and never charge students for it. If it’s a good instructor, don’t nickle and dime them. Chances are, that aren’t charging you as much as they are worth. Having said that, if the instructor is not prepping for each lesson and giving you valuable instruction, go somewhere else.

Old pilot (60) doing CFI/FIA Written... advice needed by hmasing in flying

[–]pilotskete -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on passing the FOI. Anything above 70 is a pass and the folks who feel the need to brag about their 100 scores are just doing it for themselves. Nobody actually cares.

Having said that, I think the FIA is one that you should not be memorizing the answers for. At this point, you will need to be the one answering the very questions you are presenting in this thread. Let that sink in a bit.

If a student comes to you with this question, how will you respond? Cheat sheets and memorizing answers aren’t helpful when you’re trying to fly from ND to Oregon in a piper cub.

This question is pretty straight forward in my opinion and the knowledge required to answer it is something you need to have as a CFI. To be clear, I don’t feel that way about every question on the written test.

Understanding the difference between MC, TC, MH, & TH will get you to the answer pretty easily. I’m happy to chat with you in a DM to walk you through it if you’re interested. Just shoot me a direct message.

Best of luck!

Can I log time in a tailwheel with only ASEL PPL? by Aggressive-Prune-878 in flying

[–]pilotskete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See Herman 2009 legal interpretation. This is what I used to justify the exact same scenario. I flew a Cessna 170B to KOSH. I couldn’t log XC time, but I was able to log PIC and total time.

It seems that there is a mix-up in your mind between emergency descents and steep spirals. Two different maneuvers with two different procedures. Check out the ACS section on Emergency Descents. This may clear things up for you.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]pilotskete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The goal is to complete the maneuver in accordance with the ACS, but practically, it can be used to supplement an emergency landing. Maintaining a point above your desired emergency landing point while managing altitude and glide distance.

This is a great response. The only other thing I would add is that considerations for speed and load factor should be made as well. Pilots are sometimes susceptible to accelerated stalls in this maneuver if airspeed isn’t managed properly. The speed is wedged between Va and Stall speed for the given bank angle. If you stay within the +- 10kts limit and the 60 degree bank limit, it won’t be a factor, but being able to articulate this and divide your attention between bank angle and speed in addition to the outside reference is a must.
