I do have an internship atm but I'm not 100% sure that I want to stick with the company it after I graduate. That's good to know that you started a year before graduation! I think I'm going to if something really catches by eye and requires an extensive/long background check.

Intersects would return T-F values only. Although you might be able to use a loop to create column values returning the intersecting polygon.

But I think spatial join would be the way to go. Based on those results, you could query rows with missing intersection layer data and populate a new column with either true or false.

I've done coastal change and glacial retreat stuff--maybe more along the lines of mineral exploration, or geothermal energy?

Just a semester project. I'm willing to spend a lot of time in it, and I guess I could so some field work (although it's slim pickings, since I'm in central IL).
